: 1972 AM/FM 8-Track Stereo install?

My '72 SS came from the factory with the AM/FM Stereo 4 speaker option but radio was gone when I purchased the car. I just purchased a 1971-2 AM/FM 8-Track Stereo on ebay and I can't figure out were to mount the rear support bracket to the radio? The original bracket was still mounted to the underside of the dash but I had to remove because it was in the way of the 8-Track.

The bracket was located under the A/C controls/ashtray but like I mentioned the 8-Track does not have a mounting hole on the unit itself. Also, the tuning shaft does not protrude far enough through the dash cups to install both the fader and knob. Volume knob and balance fit perfectly. Radio is without question a 71/72 model so what gives?

Is a factory AM/FM Stereo radio the same dimension as an AM/FM 8-Track Stereo player? Please help!!

Thanks,
Eric

I am curently trying to put a 8 track in my new ss dash carrier. 1970 chevelle.. i had a sweep style dash and the radio opening was all cut up to make the 8 track fit. I also have the problem of the radio stems not coming through far enough for the inner control knob. i guess a original am/fm 8 track will be needed to fit the opening correctly... or maybe purchase control knobs from restorer for 70 radio..

I'm a bit confused here...This should fit without a problem IF you truly have the correct am/fm 8-track unit AND the correct factory original rear mount attached to the dash carrier.

All Radios have the same mounting arrangements, this way the factory didn't have to waste time goofing around with different hardware and GM didn't have to spend extra $$ in production.

Your AM/FM/8 most certainly has a threaded hole to accept a bolt to hold it to the angle brace right by the ashtray. The hole is obviously further from the rear edge of the radio then let's say a standard pushbutton AM radio.

A car with a 8 track had a different bracket that mounted on the dash frame to support the back of the radio. It is a shorter bracket that is taller. It is shorter because the 8 track radio is wider. The bracket in the picture on the left is from an 8 track radio. The bracket on the right is part of a speaker bracket

If you need the 8 track support bracket I have 1 left in my stash of hard to find parts. email dsutherland70@yahoo.com. Have other radio stuff too - rear dual wiring harness, speakers, ect.

In fact I'm pretty sure its already scheduled to start on ebay later today

Wow,, that is a great look at what to LOOK for in radios and knobs.. it is interesting about the knobs for 1970.. i looked at Ground Up page 124.. found a pic of inner knobs for 69-70 mono.. their part# ik- 231. This looks like the non ss inner in the pic you attached in your reply. also listed but not pictures are ik231s which i hope are the deeper inner knobs i need.. even thopugh the radio i am using is not stock,, the problem still is that the inner knobs i have dont protrude deep enough into the hole to engage the stem wher eit needs to..

Hold the phone, The above posters were correct. Must have been thinkin' about all that egg nog :)

Yes, there will be a different bracket as well. The 8-track/radio units are physically wider inside the dash. For some reason I was thinking they "stuck out" more on the driver's side, but that is where the heat sink assembly is, so there is more protrusion on the passenger side, requiring the different rear bracket.

But, if there is ever questions on "do I have the right radio?", you can always reference:

I recently purchased a 1970 AM 8 track on ebay. I purchased the correct bracket and knobs off of thepartslaceinc.com. Once they arrived I bolted it all down and the radio and knobs fit perfect. I think the malibu dash and SS dash use different knobs. I think I remember reading that somewhere.
