: '69 SS 396 Shifter Hump
wtullos Jun 2nd, 09, 10:01 PM Ok guys. Time to help me settle a dispute. I just tore down my 69 Chevelle SS for restoration and some idiot in the last 40 years did this to my car. (Before i had it of course) Now one of us thinks it could be a 4 speed hump and the other says it is an automatic. What does it look like to you? http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv45/WesleyTullos/DSC03236.jpg

wtullos Jun 2nd, 09, 10:10 PM SO.
Here is the deal. We have to replace to hump obviously. I want to make it a 4 speed car so i dont have to do it later. But Dad (aka money man(love him to death)), doesnt want one. They dont sell an automatic hump w/out the other floor pans. So do you think, since there is no documentation saying it isnt a 4 speed, we should turn it into a 4 speed?
RB69SS396Conv Jun 2nd, 09, 10:35 PM You obviously don't have a 4-spd car. 1bad's car is a 4-spd.
A floor-shift auto car had a kind of long skinny hole in it, with a pronounced "cliff" sort of feature that the shifter cable went through. Doesn't look like that either.
Your hump looks like a column-shift auto car (no console).
Given the condition of that floor, I don't think "documentation" is much of an issue. That car isn't the right specimen to go down that road with. Make into what you want; it's more that kind of car.
wtullos Jun 2nd, 09, 10:38 PM This car has minimal rust and body damage. The passenger side quarter is going to need a little little bit of work. The hump is the worst part of the car. Its not a column shift we know that much. We just need to replace the shifting area. Other than that its a REALLY solid car.

OK it's dad speaking, We are not sure it was not a colum shift car because we don't know if they sold a 791 bucket interior with a column shift in a 72 72 paint SS.
Does anyone have the answer?

LRW69 Jun 2nd, 09, 11:41 PM From looking at the pictures, it would appear that the car
started it's life as a column shift automatic. Now that's not to
say it wasn't converted to a floor shift at some point. But an
original floor shift car would not be cut open like that from
the factory.
Another thought might be, some one had put a four speed in
it at some point, and over the years it was removed.
That could explain the odd shaped hole you now have.
What shifter was in it when you bought it?
wtullos Jun 2nd, 09, 11:47 PM OK Dad, thanks for throwing codes -_- ...we have determined that when we purchased the car it had aftermarket (wrong color as well) interior, a beat up console, and an automatic shifter poorly mounted because of the hole. The steering column is a no tilt, no shift. We also noticed a pivot mounted on the frame that appears to be for a column shift. Just wondering if they installed that on all automatics on the line.
LRW69 Jun 2nd, 09, 11:58 PM Yes, all cars got that pivot for the back drive linkage to connect to
the steering column, including 4 speed cars.
Are there bucket seat brackets welded to floor?
I couldn't tell from the pictures.
wtullos Jun 3rd, 09, 12:14 AM I think it does

All the rust color is actually origional orange paint! (Discolored by asphalt underlayment) :)

YenkoChevelle69 Jun 3rd, 09, 12:34 AM I'm going to go with the rest and say that it was a column car. Not positive, but the bucket seat brackets look like they may have been added later.

wtullos Jun 3rd, 09, 12:41 AM It is an origional bucket seat car. Trim tag 791 means Bucket seats in Parchment white.

Here is a reference.^^^
Does anyone know if they put column shifters in bucket seat SS cars in 1969?
YenkoChevelle69 Jun 3rd, 09, 12:45 AM Whoops. I knew that. I guess I wasn't paying attention. Yes you could get pretty much any combination. My Orange car is a bench 4 speed car.
If the car originally was not equipped with a console and was auto trans it would've been a column shift. If it had a console it would've been floor shift.
