just a quick basic question about heads on the L-35 and L-78 engines. bigger valves on the 78? what were the differences in the intake ports. were they the same? i know the intake manifold on the L-78 had more of a square look than oval, as far as i can see. i'd appreciate any help, thanks.

It's just the difference between rect port heads at 290 up to 325 cc's intake port and and large oval port that range from 235 to 260+ cc's BB heads is all here.

And GM made peanut port BB heads too that you can tell b/c they are wider than tall. They can range from 200 cc to maybe up to 230 or so cc intake port.

And don't forget that they made early, closed, some later, semi-closed w/ the sparkplug side flat laid back, then later open and finally squared-off almost quench flat less smog chambered heads.

One last head is the newer L-29, so-called smaller ported large oval head that has a 100 cc heart-shaped fast-burn open chamber and like 230 cc intake ports. And also a good, although small exhaust port.

so basically you would do no good with a L-78 intake and holley carb on stock L-35 heads? or would you get anything out of that setup? thanks for any advice.(just a thought).
