I can't believe it, brought car in for some last minute adjustments and a starter swap. Drove it home, started cleaning the windows and smelled something burning. I opened the hood and sure enough there was a small fire in the area of the starter with flames rising up. I couldn't get it out with a rag and ended up having to use a fire extinguisher. I called Hagerty and arranged for a tow back to Island Muscle first thing in the am.
The car is a mess, it's dead and not running, but i'm stiil trying to make it to leave by early wednesday am.

:( Now that's truly a bummer. You dont say what year it is, but check the fusible links.
Sounds like it could have been a whole lot worse!!..still sucks!! hopefully they stock parts..and there is no paint damage..good luck and hope to see you make it down.

Crap -Sounds familiar, I changed the starter last year also, got the positive cable to close to the exhaust manifold and it melted, and shorted, and almost fried the battery, ended up disconnecting the battery on the side of the highway because it was starting to fry. Not fun but an easy fix. I'll bring an extra cable with me just in case you cant find one.
Hang in there "W" brother and remember there are about 1000 Chevelle Mechanics were you are going.:D
