: RAID synchronizing
jpete May 30th, 09, 11:57 PM My RAID array ate it right in the middle of working on the computer today.
I rebooted and got back to my desktop and was greeted by the RAID utility asking my to synchronize my array.
I let it go and about an hour later, everything seemed find.
The question is, how many times can I get away with that little trick?
And does that mean one of my drives is about to eat it?
Thanks
DaleM May 31st, 09, 10:32 AM If it's RAID 1 and one disk is failing the other should remain viable but I'd be looking to replace the offending drive as soon as it's feasible.
If it's RAID 0 you're flirting with disaster...if one drive in the array goes, so goes ALL your data most likely.

I change my RAID drives every 2-3 years.
I take them out and they become new drives in the wife's or one of the kids computers.
Smae way with the externals that I have...I buy a new one and the old one goes to one of the kids, wife...sometimes I share them on my network...makes access to everything from anywhere really easy...
Of all my harrdives in the house 20+ I have yet to have one go out and not be able to recover all the data or not get it to work again...

It's RAID 1. I already went down that road with RAID 0.
Just a tip. Keep a copy of Linux (Mint is my choice) around so if your array goes belly up, you can still access the drives and retrieve any important stuff.
BTDT. :D
jpete Jun 15th, 09, 8:01 PM OK, well, I'm getting the "synchronize" messages again so it's clearly time for a new hard drive.
My question now is, I know I'm supposed to get another drive the same size as the other half of the RAID array. Does that mean I MUST or I SHOULD?
DaleM Jun 15th, 09, 10:26 PM Should if possible. A larger drive would result in lost (unused) space. That is one 320GB drive and one 500GB drive would result in a 320 size for both as far as the RAID goes.
jpete Jun 15th, 09, 11:22 PM Cool, thanks.
I chickened out and bought as similar drive as I could. :D
Same size, mfg, speed etc...

Cool, now get another two for the speed of a raid 6 or 10 :)
jpete Jun 16th, 09, 9:11 AM Don't get me started. :) It was hard enough to get the wife to part with $45 for a 250G drive. I saw 1.5Tb drives for $80. I was like "Oohh honey look! ......nevermind..." :) Women! They just don't understand the theory of "Bigger, better, faster, more." :D
