you would probably have to tell us if the car is a 6 cylinder, or a 283, 327, 396. jim

I would worry less about the correct number on a crankshaft than making sure it is a good crankshaft.

John,
Is it a crankshaft or a block ? If it is a crankshaft, the only way I would buy it is if the seller lets you take it to a machine shop first and have it checked for cracks and make sure that it can be machined to a usable size. Those crankshafts are not that hard to find already finished and ready to install so a used one is a big gamble.

Bill is very correct here, and if you were looking for the steel one, which many if not all 66 396 2 and all 4 bolt blocks had; the correct number would be a 6223. However, I think I can only remember seeing 1 out of several dozen which actually had a cast date on it. The key here is like Bill stated get a good one already turned and polished unless there is a rock solid money back guarantee should it not be good.

This one has the numbers 3856223 on it and the seller states its still in the original box he wants $400.00 for it.

Ouch. Unless you are planning on turning over 7K regularly, a good cast Eagle is hard to beat for the price. And they aren't known for failing. I don't think it's the crank you need to be worried about in a BB, it's the stock rods. Even they're good up to about 6.5K RPM. Key is to have the entire rotating assy balanced before assy. Just my opinion.

BTW - listen to BillK, he knows of what he speaks.

Is the $400 crank a nitraded and crossed drilled crank, if not just save some money and buy one from PAW on Ebay, $400 is too much for a regular 427 steel crank. The PAW one is affordable, unused but now at .010-.010. I bought two and was very pleased. The non-crossdrilled and non nitraded will work great for most applications unless you are going crazy power and RPM.

Myself, I wouldn't be scared to run a 10 second motor combo with this crank. Heck a stock cast crank will live in the 10's.
