I have some surface rust inside the trunk. Besides blasting and sealing, is there anything else that I can do? I thought that I read here that you can take an acid type liquid and apply then rinse with water. Am I remembering correctly or just crazy?

Clean trunk with a wire brush and then paint with POR-15

Yes, mild acid will eat away rust. Be sure to neutralize the acid then rinse well and dry completely.
Then prime and paint as usual.

There is no subsitute for removing the rust from the metal. If it is only surface as you say there should be plenty of metal left to use something that will apply pressure. For cheap buy several 3 or 4" wire wheels to use with your drill. If you have a 4" hand grinder buy a wheel for it. Once you are back to factory metal you can do like the factory did. Paint it .

You are probably thinking of Navel jelly. Not a miracle product but in conjunction with steel wool and elbow gease can help get rid of surface rust.
