: B-Body Calipers and Hoses Used Survey

Hello;

I'm putting together a document listing all the parts required to do a B-Body spindle conversion. I've got everything but good caliper and rotor data. I need more info on the caliper and hose combinations that will work. Anyone that has info on the calipers and hoses you used please post it. Also need to know if you used the drum or disk brake hose frame bracket.

If I get a general agreement for a parts combination then I'll include it in the document.

Please make sure you are completely certain you know what you used if you post it. I already read about one combo of readily available parts that doesn't work.

Peter,

I haven't found a hose that I really like yet. That is my next step on my project. I have the Vette rotors and Surburban calipers like BC does. He has made his work, but I have three sets of hoses right now and none fit to my liking yet. Another couple of weeks and I'll have it together and I can report then. I don't know at all about the 1LE setup.

Good Luck. And Good Idea.

Nobody wants to help? I figured this info could be put in a tech reference on this site and I could also create a pdf file or simple HTML file for whoever wants it. I've yet to find a complete listing of all the parts needed in one place so I've been recording them as I go. I first want to make the info as correct and complete as possible.

I also need Moog part numbers for 71-72 center link and idler arm then I have all the part numbers needed for 64-72 cars.

I'd like to help but I can't remember what parts I used. I wrote it down somewhere but I'm not sure where. I think I got my list from Car Craft magazine. If I find my notes, I'll surely post here.

I'm going to see if my A-body calipers will fit for one thing, though the hoses will probably still need to be longer.

Peter Federal Mogul's website (http://www.federal-mogul.com) shows the same centerlink 68-72: DS749

Well, I used 1970 B body disc hoses & b-body calipers on my last one (alone with 96 caprice 9C1 brake pads).

I am going to try to use the 2nd gen F-body calipers on my next one, along with 69 f-body disc hoses if the 9C1 pads fit.

I have heard that the mouth on the b-body calipers have a .25 bigger throw on them than the F-body calipers do which may cause a problem when the pads wear down enough (they might loose contact ????)

Peter,

Here's what I used on mine:

Rubber Brake Lines - 1972 B-Body Brake lines from Car-Quest Car Quest #BRK SP5229

Calipers - 1970-1976 Camaro Calipers (loaded with premium pads) from Car-Quest Car Quest #CAL-4060 & CAL-4059

Good answers so far. Keep them coming.

Dave; your web site could be a little confusing. At the end of the 4th last paragraph you have "We also realize the brake lines off the Caprice were waaayyy too long, and decide to call it a night." When I first read this it sounded like the Caprice hoses were the wrong length. Then, I realized you were probably talking about some hard lines that you hadn't mentioned before.

So far, the early 70's Caprice hoses and the origional 69-72 Chevelle calipers seem to be mentioned a lot. The 2nd gen Camaro caliper comes up too, usually also used with the same Caprice hose. I would think these are good combinations to recommend.

MrAbody; Which B-body calipers. I already looked at mid 80's ones that were listed as working and even had a picture of it together on a web site. The caliper didn't work and it didn't match the picture. Most GM calipers that would fit are for 1" rotors. The truck ones are wider.

Well, on my 72 I used 84 caprice calipers with the 9c1 pads on the 1LE rotors and they worked fine. Although I am thinking that the mouth on those calipers is a bit too wide and I *may* have had 'problems' if I had driven them enough so that they wore down to where they might have lost contact with the rotor.

Hmm, I don't know what to think there. I looked at 72 Caprice hoses with 85 Caprice calipers and there was no way it was going to work. At full lock, the hose would have been badly stretched, if they would even reach at all.

But, the mouth on those Caprice calipers and the mouth on a 70 Chevelle caliper are the exact same width do I wouldn't worry about the width.

That swap wasn't on a Lamans (LAMEans) was it??

Peter,

You're right...I went back and re-read it...it was the hard-lines to the MC I was talking about. The parts list is correct.

I'm going to be redoing the entire site shortly, so I'll address that.

yea peter it was on the LameAns. I don't know what to tell you though, from what I recall (at least what I wrote down!) they were 84 caprice calipers and 72 caprice hoses. Plenty of room left on the hoses with lock to lock. Maybe
I was drunk and got F-body calipers, but I am pretty sure it was caprice calipers. I am buying a set of f-body calipers for my 66, I will compare the 2 when I get them.

I got my flexible hoses from Pure Choice Motorsports. they'll custom make braided hoses for just about anything. Really sharp, and super high quality! My hard lines are just stock chevelle replacement lines.

Peter F,

What information do you have so far? I've visited my local treasures and found some b-body donors. I'm looking at removing some of the parts this coming week and would appreciate any info on this as I go through the selection available.

Thanks!

I've got a Word document that basically details what you need to do the swap. Even includes part numbers for a bunch of the parts and pictures of some parts. Get me your e-mail and I'll send it to you. I can also do pdf if you want.
