: High beams wont go on?
Cr85rRida May 26th, 09, 10:50 PM On my 68 i cant figure out how to get the high beam lights on. I can pull the switch a little to activate the side lights, then i pull it out further and the regular beams go on. But thats it... i tried turning the switch but that only affects the dim on the dash lights. Am i missing something here?
Also i purchased a new light switch, how to i pull out the old one and insert the new one? thanks for the help and sorry for the noob questions this is my first muscle car!
Dean May 26th, 09, 10:58 PM Dimmer switch is on the floor, near the driver's side kick panel.
novaderrik May 27th, 09, 12:18 AM sorry, but it's funny when someone asks questions like this...
ducatibrandon May 27th, 09, 12:29 AM Make sure that it is not grounding out from old age and water like mine was. Dimmer thats funny
BAD415 May 27th, 09, 5:36 AM sorry, but it's funny when someone asks questions like this...
I'd bet it happens often to people under the age of 40. :D

That does seem to be the case. :D

Same as people over 40 not being able to find the tilt lever in the newer cars:mad:
I will maintain to the death that:
Tilt levers belong on the left side of the column
Wiper switches have no business being on a stalk on the right of the column (too easy to turn on wipers when you want reverse)

i take it you don't like where Ford put the tilt lever during the 70's..
Herb May 27th, 09, 3:45 PM I've actually had "young" people ask me at shows what that button on the floor was for.
Gosh I wish I didn't know ;-)

I hope that your hands are small for this one. There is a button on your headlight switch that you have to depress to remove the headlight knob/shaft. The trick is getting your hand up in the dash board to push that button.
On your new switch look for a small metal button with a spring behind it on the side of the switch. The orientation of that button when the switch is installed correctly is facing the left side of the car. Thats the button you have to push.
Once you get the knob/shaft out you can remove (unscrew)the trim bezel and then the switch.
Best of luck
Bill
fishhead May 27th, 09, 5:38 PM Reminds me of that blonde joke...
How do I reach that switch down there???
webfoot May 27th, 09, 5:43 PM I'd bet its your floor switch. Lucky they are cheap and easy to install.
I wish the hi-beams were still on the floor. I'm 33 but grew up driving mom's 78 nova and dad's 73 cheyenne.
I hate how the column levers are "command central" on newer vehicles.

The combination tilt/turn was not so bad.
But I did once severely damage a column in a 79 LTD. Geeze, it's an LTD---tilt should be standard. This particular car had no tilt column.
That little clamping lever below the columns now just pisses me off.
I just want to change the angle of the wheel-----not drop the whole column down.
Besides----with the amount of adjustment available nowadays----might as well not even bother with tilt:mad::mad:
wills65 May 27th, 09, 6:43 PM Dont all the later model American cars have a real "tilt" column and not that import "drop the whole column into your lap" deal?
SEVNTE May 27th, 09, 7:48 PM Check the block where the wires go through the firewall to the back of the dash.
My 70 had the same problem and it was a loose block on the firewall!!!

I don't think there is anything wrong other than the fact that Matt didn't know that there is a dimmer switch on the floor.
ducatibrandon May 27th, 09, 10:45 PM True but if he did try it and it did nothing then he could take another look at it. I hope you get it all working man.
Cr85rRida May 27th, 09, 11:23 PM Glad im giving everyone a laugh on here, we can all use one in these hard times:D
Anyway it was rainy out today so i didnt want to pull the cover off the car, ill check it out tomorrow. Thanks for all the answers...even the sarcastic ones..haha:p
fishhead May 28th, 09, 8:33 AM I've had 4 69's.
The dimmer didnt work at first...
I just kept pressing on it and eventually all of them worked...never replaced any of them...

They NEVER work when you don't know where they are. :D
I really hate the wiper switch lever on the right too, I keep turning on the wipers thinking it's a shift lever. :o
It's hard to get out of the habit when you've been driving cars with the shift lever on the right side of the column for 57 years. (well, almost, the first few years it was actually on the floor)
Speaking of which...TRIVIA: on my old A-Model Fords you could pull up on the gear shift and rotate it around out of your way IF you were doing certain things in the front seat.
Cr85rRida May 28th, 09, 12:37 PM Alright maybe im not looking good enough, but all i see is the parking brake down there....it looks like theres no other switch :o:confused:
Rodeo73 May 28th, 09, 12:54 PM Look further down past the parking brake, right on the floor board, in the corner area. Its a push button switch that you toggle with your foot. So basically you step on it.
Steve1972 May 28th, 09, 12:54 PM It's a round push button that sticks out of the floor, it's not on the bottom of the dash by the brake lever, you step on it to switch from high to low.
Not a great picture but here's a quick google search:

charbilly2001 May 28th, 09, 12:57 PM Maybe it's under the carpet. Look harder!
Cr85rRida May 28th, 09, 1:25 PM OHHH i thought that was like a bumper/rubber stop thing for the parking brake! ill try it out right now lol im a dumbass. Thanks guys, if they dont go on then ill be back to let ya know haha
Cr85rRida May 28th, 09, 1:49 PM THEY WORK! But i still wanna change the light switch. I was looking at the new one and there isint any buttons...its just a long metal rod with the peice you pull/push/turn on the end. It looks like it just slides in some how, the end of the metal is grooved a too...any suggestions?!

Keep looking. there's a button there somewhere. Minus the button the rod would simply pull out of the switch everytime you pulled on it.
Failing that post pics of all for sides of the new switch so we can see it.
ducatibrandon Jun 1st, 09, 12:09 AM REMOVE the battery cables when you get ready to do this. When you replace the switch be VERY carefull you don't break the dash. You will pull the lights to the on (all the way out) postion and then on the back side of the dash there is a Small push button that you will psh on and then pull the rest of the Knob and shaft out. Then you unscrew the switch from the front and remove it fron the back.
novaderrik Jun 1st, 09, 12:20 AM look at the new headlight switch to find the little button you have to push to get the knob out.. you have to kind of push the button as you pull the knob out. if you pull the knob out all the way and then try to push the button, it won't go.
there are some little tricks to working on the older stuff..
