gonna have to put it to a poll. i know i was extremely mad at the 67 yesterday and about to drive it off a cliff. i am weighing the pros and cons of it all and what i came up with:

PROS
new(er) truck:
it will hopefully be more dependable thus i wouldnt have the knot in my stomach worrying if im gonna make it and if i have to call someone to help
i will have more room in the driveway and possibly be able to buy a trailer in the near future
i would ditch my exploder
mega comfort

67
it would have big block hauling power
less expensive (right now and monthly)so i would be able to actually get to the track instead of having to save for gas to get to the track, instead i could get go fast parts :D
would only be used for hauling so i would depend on it maybe once a month
all the work i have done wouldnt be for nothing
easier to repair and i can work on it myself
its old and ugly so nothing i do to it will hurt how it looks and im not afraid to haul anything in the back

cons
newer truck
monthly payment
if it breaks hauling, im not gonna make it to work
repair costs $$$

67
its a 67 so its not in pristine shape
road noise is brutal, comfort barely bearable
its already pissed me off since i had to have a tow vehicle come get my tow vehicle. i wanna know im gonna make it to and from the track everytime without any negative feeling
need heads, intake, exhaust manifolds and the tubes to connect it to my headers and possibly a carb & distributor

so its to a poll we will see what happens. i already know what my gfs vote is and she counts for three votes lol

One other important question, is the exploder in good shape as your daily driver or is it getting close to needing costly maint? In other words, would buying the newer truck be a good decision for other than just a tow rig for the race car?

14K truck with insurance will cost you about $350-$400 a month. three months worth of payments pays for a new ingine in the 67. Spend a little on the 67 for upgrades. Heck, you may even put an automatic in it to make it even easier to drive.

the xploder is decent shape the trans is not what it used to be but drives real well as long as i dont beat on it. thats what the nova is for :D

Heck Ben, think long and hard on the overall costs. You may be able to get an older, low mileage truck for much cheaper. Tammy and I have thought about a newr truck many times but not willing to dump the extra money into a payment. Although we would use it alot, at this point spending a little $$ on the duelly is the best option.

For a young couple, just getting started and considering the state of the economy, it may be wise to avoid more monthly bills that you have to worry about making. Look around, you may come across a great truck for a few K.

Can't hurt to make a call on the ZZ4, it would bolt right up and use the same accessories.

There are some Low mileage 80-90's trucks for decent prices as well. Was just looking at GMC's and chev 2500-3500's on C/L and a few priced very well and pretty low miles considering. A p/u with under 120K would last a very long time if using it for towing.

Put the motor in the 67. Best move in this economy like Darryl said. As for the comfort and road noise, it can be taken care of easily now days. Definitely wins as far as the cool factor when the Nova is in tow.

it really didnt look that cool pouring out smoke down I-5. i see it as much as anybody how cool it is but the bottom line is i need to make it to the track plain and simple. i have no problems puttin the bb in the 67 i guess i just need some reassurance that its a good idea.

i think i know the answer but should i pull the motor and trans at once out of the 67?

ZZ4, and a TH400 for the 67 and tow with it.

Trade the Crappy Exploder in on a nice car that gets killer MPg.

I still have the 79 C-10 I bought new when I was 18

in 2005 I bought a new Ranger

A couple of years ago, a friend gave me his 82 Dodge D-150 slant6/4spd and 43,000 mi
(claimed it would be too hard to sell)

I now drive this truck daily 30 mi one way----windroar is horrible (weatherstipping rotted)
but it rides much nicer than the Ranger and fuel mileage is not much different.
Don't get too upset when bozos at the airport long term parking ding it (30 days in the last 60 in airport parking).
Can leave it unlocked with the windows down and not worry about it.

Fix the old truck----or better yet, get another old truck

Hey Ben, if you do consider getting a different truck, my dad is going to be selling our 93' Dakota with a 318 in it. Around 120k miles IIRC...Runs like a champ and I'd trust it as a daily and it still gets around 16-18mpg which is damn good for a hauler. All you'd need to do is get a hitch for it.

If you're interested let me know and I'll talk to him before he puts it up on Craigslist. He just bought an 04' Grand Cherokee is why we're selling it.

If you don't want another truck or payment which like mentioned, seems like a rather bad idea with the economy the way it is. Less bills = much better in my book :D

Just put the bb in it and haul it

PNB,

How about a mild 350 upgrade?
Someone you know has a runner 350 shortblock removed only because there was a larger engine going into their El Camino.
