I think I have this thing close to being right, but I'd like a second opinion.......

On my 6AL box, I know the thick red and black go to the battery. The thin red goes to a switched +12v source ( I have yet to hunt for or find one of these under the good).

Orange and Black are running to the coils posative and negative, respectively.

Green and purple are in a harness by themselves, and connect directly up to a pigtail that sticks out of the cap on the distributor.

No tach yet, so I left that unhooked.

On the distributor cap on the right, there is a section marked batt and tach that appears as though a plastic connector could clip in there. Do I need to worry about anything with that?

Also, is there an easy known switched 12v source under there somewhere?

I should mention that I'm not sure about what brand this distributor is. I don't see any MSD brandings on it at all, and it's just a plain looking black cap too. I'd be used to seeing a red cap for an MSD I guess......but the green and purple wires already being there on it makes me think that it is an MSD...

Sounds like its a HEI distributor if you have Batt and Tach marked on the cap. For a switched 12 volt source I use an output on my fusebox that said IGN. To make sure its the right one use a test light to make sure its a switched 12 cvolts and there is 12 volts present while cranking.

Am I on the right road then, if this is in fact an HEI distributor? Do I need to connect anything to the cap where it's marked for batt? Or is that taken care of by the MSD box now?

you can get an MSD distributor with a black cap, sounds like you have an HEI though with the batt and tach labeled on the cap

Thats taken care of now with the MSD box, do you have an external coil?

Yeah, there was an external coil that I mounted on the firewall along with the MSD box.

I'll try to grab some pictures after work. If memory serves me right it has those lables, but it was a long weekend too ;) Here you can actuallly see the coil and a portion of the cap, if this helps any!

Here are the pictures of how it's currently setup:

Something that was unplugged and labled when I was taking the old SB out last year. I have no clue what it went to.... :( Hoping to get keyed 12v out of it though for the MSD box......

No idea what this rubber boot connector is for either. Seems to be that I remember seeing oil pump sender units having connectors like this, but this wire is way to short for that.

So, after seeing those, do I just need to provide keyed 12v to my MSD box and call it finished?

The one labelled "M" is the 12 volt key 0n. That wire with the rubber boot is the oil sender wire.
