DaleM May 26th, 09, 10:50 AM Can't say if these pay-for-play are scams or not but they certainly capitalize on the virus problems out there.
Doing a search it seems like there are lot's of talk in forums.

One forum poster suggested...go into safe mode (hit F8 as your computer boots up) and do a system restore to an earlier date (go to START, then ALL PROGRAMS> ACCESSORIES> SYSTEM TOOLS> SYSTEM RESTORE).
I've never found System Restore to be of much use but it (supposedly) restore system settings (not programs or data) to the last restore point. Not sure how much it'll help with a root virus like this though. Might be worth a shot.
I had another one of those fake virus portection programs and ran into the same offers to 'fix' it for a price. I wound up going the manual route similar to those outlined it the links above to remove it. Took a while and luckily I had a second computer to search the net for solutions.
Good luck.

This is a little different spin on a SCAM that hit me. Every now and then a "Resident Shield Alert" pops up at boot time. It warns of the impending end of civilization if I don't send them money to fix the problem with a new version of some sort of software. IT IS BULL****!
All you are doing is supplying the thieves with your credit card number so they can buy things. DO NOT MESS WITH THIS. Get professional help removing the scam. NEVER sign up for anything that is "marketed" this way.
The SCAMWARE I had changed names..."Resident Shield"....."Spyware Protector" and others were the labels it went under at different times. I sends a "warning" to the screen at boot time. The warning appears to be just the same as something you might get when Norton spots something or when Norton runs out of subscription time. The "warning" appears "over" the desktop and it CANNOT be removed...at least I cannot remove it. Also if you leave a screen at idle long enough the screen shows bugs cralling around eating up whatever is displayed. Sorta like a screen saver. The bugs are intended to be a "reminder" that the "Resident Shield" has found problems with your computer.
Another thing and I am not totally sure about this. I think (THINK) that the SCAMWARE somehow interrupted the Norton search process and in effect made itself look as if Norton had found a problem. A window popped up that said I need to send money to get special software to remove the latest threat. NOTE: it did not specifically say the money went to Norton. It indicated that running the Norton scan had found something that the CURRENT Norton software could not fix. Very subtile.
That is right! When running the Norton scan I got a message that led me to belive that Norton encountered something that was new and NOT removeable by the current version of Norton. All I needed was an update / new software for a few bucks ($39.95)! I could purchase that update via my credit card) and then the problem would be fixed!!!!!!!
DON'T MESS WITH THIS STUFF! DON'T SEND A CREDIT CARD NUMBER! Get someone who KNOWS what they are doing to remove this thing unless you REALLY know how to do it yourself.

I don't know about this one you reference BUT my research lead me to conclude that some of these SPYWARE REMOVERS actually ADD spyware!
People need to be VERY VERY careful with this stuff. ONLY use Security and Spyware Removers from sources YOU KNOW ARE LEGIT.
CDN SS May 26th, 09, 11:27 AM Thanks guys .was very tempting to get sucked in by this but when I ran AVG anmd it found nothing plus PAV has not biz addres or anmy contact info made me suspicious
Xplantdad May 26th, 09, 11:54 AM Run Malwarebytes (it's free) www.malwarebytes.org (http://www.malwarebytes.org)
Then run Spybot search and destroy (also free) www.safer-networking.org/ (http://www.safer-networking.org/)
Then run hijackthis (free also) http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
And see if you can isolate, quarantine and eliminate your problem!
BTW, this site http://spywarehammer.com/ is an awesome place to get your problems sorted out. There are a few really good people who volunteer countless hours to help people get rid of this crap! :beers:
EDIT....If I were you...I'd log onto the spyware hammer site after downloading and installing all of the programs listed above...but don't run them until you get clear instructions from the tech who will be assigned to help you!
Good luck!:thumbsup::beers:

rocks66ss May 27th, 09, 10:41 AM Bill,
If you Google "Personal Anti Virus Removal " there are step by step instructions on removing this "Rogue Anti Virus"
Last week my son was on the computer and a "System Security 2009" literately took over my desk top. It said there was a Trojan that was going to spread my credit Card info, stealing personal information.
It had a scan that was going to tell me about all the viruses I have. I shut down my computer and booted in safe mode, and ran my AVG, same version as yours, I deleted the program, ( It so conveniently installed by it self) and tried to find in on my C drive. After all that it was still there.
I ended up doing a system restore to the day before to get rid of the damn thing.

CDN SS May 27th, 09, 11:30 AM Yep sounds like same thing Rocky ............good info Thanks ..see you next week in Nashville
