: sandblast cabinet help
teetam May 25th, 09, 11:30 PM I am using a sand blast cabinet with play sand. For some reason, my sand is not being picked up from the cabinet. I am only getting air out of my gun. I have tried 2 guns with same result. What could be the cause of this.. Any help will be appreciated..
rubadub May 25th, 09, 11:46 PM Your sand may getting damp, did you bang the tube that goes into the sand on its side in case its plugged.
Try holding your finger over the tip of the gun and see if you can blow it out backwards.
Walter A May 25th, 09, 11:58 PM The play sand I bought for my unit was not consistent in size. The big grains were stopping up the pickup.
I bought a piece of window screen, formed it over a clean bucket and strained the sand. The sand worked better then.

Don't risk your sandblast gloves. (or finger) Use an old piece of heavy rubber. I keep a small chunk of inner tube in my cabinet just for that.

 You should be able to go to Lowes and get the #30 (or 30 mesh) or is it #60 I cant remember. It has been graded to a higher standard. You may be able to find it at your local hardware store. It has been dried as well, some play sand still has moisture in it.
If all else fails, go to harbor freight and get walnut shells or glass beads, it isn't that much.

I've been using the same pair of sandblast gloves for years and have never hurt them yet.

Never using my finger to stop airflow is just one of those habits acquired from working as a machinist for over 40 years. I never assume how much pressure will be behind the nozzle. I guess it's not much of an issue when working in a home shop. Even so I still retain certain habits like safety shoes, safety glasses and respirators even when in my home shop. Maybe overkill. maybe not.
1badss396 May 26th, 09, 12:11 PM Also check the size of the nozzle it might be too small or you might need a little more air pressure for sand? I never used sand in my cabinet only glass bead.

You can never be to safe, but most guys know what there dealing with when it comes to there own stuff that they work with all the time.
You could add supplied air to your list, I seldom if ever use a respirator anymore, supplied air for everything.
I do my share of bead and sandblasting, and always supplied air, I won't even walk by a beadblaster or sandblaster pot without it on.
Not even a rattle can, its supplied air.

It fits right in the old bead blaster.

It's all bead blasted and ready for paint. Notice the supplied air there??? I use that any time I even get near that bead blaster. I'll be rattle canning this carrier and I'll be in supplied air for that.

1badss396 May 26th, 09, 12:25 PM Rob where is the seat belt for your dog???
JNorton May 26th, 09, 12:27 PM That picture begs for a caption...but I heven't come up with one yet.
rubadub May 26th, 09, 12:32 PM I guess I should throw this in the mix, as long as somebody mentioned respirators.
I would venture a good guess that a lot of hobbists as well as professional body men might not have a proper fit of the respirator there using, and in a few cases the wrong type of respirator or (cannister) for what there breathing.
So, if you get the paper type supplied air hood you don't have to worry about your facial features or fit or anything, just put it on a go for it.
I guess I could also point out, if somebody is going to do over (I'll throw out a number here) $5000 dollars worth of body work, figure in the supplied air, about $1000.
You can use it for other things also, I spray my minature fruit trees with it. Any blowing out the car body or shop, any vacuuming, staining the deck, if it has dust or fumes or sparks and dirt its always supplied air.
If you look at what chemicals are involved in a frame off restoration, aw never mind.:D

This is Buster. He's a Rat Terrier and is the same age as Bigboy. I take him every place I go. He loves to chase rabbits, but can't catch them.

Back to the original question.
What pressure are you using to blast? What is the nozzle size?
Can anyone give some general guidlines for pressure and different nozzle sizes?
thanks
Trophyman May 26th, 09, 1:35 PM I have a full time person blasting all day. We use Aluminum Oxide or Silicon Oxide medium. We use 150 or 220 grit a lot.
ALWAYS wear a respirator. ALWAYS.
We have a cabinet with an exhaust and filter system, so the dust is not a problem.
Never have used sand. Too coarse and inconsistent in size.
Just my .02

I like that idea for use at home. My respirator gets too uncomfortable in the summer. Plus the hood would help keep the crap from falling down my collar when blasting outside.

I use sand for everything, siphon, pressurized pot and bead blasting. Always use supplied air when I'm around it.
About $7 a hundred pounds.
