I bought a 12 bolt from a guy and it doesn't look like my other 10 or 12 bolts. The rear spring perch on my other axles have a bended peice of metal that bends up to support the spring, but my new 12-bolt doesnt have that. It just has a spacer in between the spring and the axle support and a bolt running in between it.
and the springs are different. The top of my real springs coil inward and my new springs just coil straight up. Could this axel be an ElCamino's or something?
thank you for all of your help, graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I believe that is a differance between the early rears and the later ones. Not sure when they changed, 68 or 67. The later ones are also wider by a inch or so.

I think you just got an earlier rear and it would work as long as you use the correct springs. Also the differance in width may cause problems with your wheels and tires rubbing when they didn't before.

I've never actually seen the earlier rear ends so I'm just going on what I've read here just to get you started. Don't put any bets on me being correct.

Sounds like you have a 64-66 rear. These are same width as 67 but the springs as you noticed are different. The control arms are the same as 67. The 68+ got the wider rear and different upper control arms. If you use the new rear in a 67 use the 67 style springs but you need to use the bolt on retainer.
The casting date will tell the year. It is located on the center section on one of the triangular support gussets close to the cover opening. Will be small letter for month and numbers for day and last digit of year.
