: Negative Battery Cable
Tellyepp May 25th, 09, 2:28 AM I'm restoring a 1967 SS Chevelle. I'm trying to find out what is the purpose for the additional (2nd) negative wire, which connects to the inner passenger fender? Will the car start without this second cable not attached to the fender? I bought a negative battery cable which doesn"t have that 2nd black wire. Want to know If I'm making a mistake not having that second cable to connect to the fender..
Elcoman May 25th, 09, 2:30 AM You will need that ground to the inner fender.
Tellyepp May 25th, 09, 2:43 AM What happens without that ground. Curious, because I'm having problems sometimes starting my car.
troposcuba May 25th, 09, 3:07 AM that grounds the body of the car. should also be some from the heads to the firewall or innner fender, and some from the body to the frame somewhere as well. it could lead to hard starting problems, but i doubt it. more likely that there is a bad connection in the actual starter wiring. check all those connections to be sure they are clean and not corroded.
do a search for chassis ground. you will find lots of info here. some horror stories about cars that did not have the grounds. one recently that ate some trans parts pretty bad. also fried throttle cables are common.
easy solution though, just run a wire (not sure what gage is req'd... same as the one on your old cable) from the neg terminal to the original ground point.
Tellyepp May 25th, 09, 3:14 AM Will do...thanks
Finally May 25th, 09, 8:43 AM The engine, starter and ignition get their ground from the main negative cable. Everything else, headlights, radio, blower motor, etc. get their ground through the chassis and the small ground wire from the fender to the negative battery post. Should be 10g wire just like the small one off the positive cable.
oldtimeparts May 25th, 09, 9:05 AM There cannot be enough grounds !!!, Matter of fact I add grounds, especially the dash !!!

Oh boy, here we go again. :D
There CAN be enough grounds.
Tellyepp May 25th, 09, 10:33 AM I will be returning the negative battery cable I bought, for one with the second 10g wire, so I can connect it to my fender. I just want to make sure that the inconsistancy that I'm get starting my car, is because of that ground. Or do I have another problem (possibly a bad starter or current issue.) Sometimes the motor doesn't turn over, I just hear a clicking noise which appears to be coming from the starter. Then on the next attempt, it fires up.

:yes:your start problem sounds like a weak soleonid???
they have a HD version that i liked to use, good old made in the u.s.a. type.
also check your engine to battery/frame ground cable this could be loose or have corrosion.....
