View Full Version : Wheel bearings
snydes Feb 22nd, 01, 5:26 PM The other night I got a mess of parts at the local parts shop, including front wheel bearings and seals. I didn't recognize the manufacturer of them at the time but when I got home I seen they are made in china, it says the company is a division of Federal Mogul, but I am thinking about returning them and getting some brand name ones. What does everyone think about this? Also, I got new rotors, which came with the races in them already, so should they be replaced with the races that come with the bearings, or is it best to use the races that came with the rotors (it would sure be easier)?
Thanks.
John_Muha Feb 22nd, 01, 6:41 PM Use the races in the rotors. You paid for them. Chinese bearings. Thought all they made was water outlets.
New world out there for small auto parts. My bearings usually come from Mexico. Good luck in finding made and assembled USA bearings. Remember, Made in USA can mean assembled from Chinese parts.
snydes Feb 22nd, 01, 7:11 PM Well, maybe I will use them after all, I just wanted to check with someone else. I appreciate the help!
IGOTTA71 Feb 22nd, 01, 8:53 PM Where did you buy your parts from? If you got the mfrom Advance Auto, they're pretty good stuff. We carry 2 lines, BCA/National, and Federal Mogul. They are both good quality, and have not had any come back defective. If you want to buy a brand name, go to Autozone and get some Timken bearings, You'll par big bucks, and have a proven name part, but I doubt you'll have trouble with the Federal Mogul bearings as long as you pack them properly. fastburn Feb 23rd, 01, 1:47 PM Federal Mogul is OK. Timken is by far the best - I would personally use no other. SKF or SKS whatever they are is a name brand but I dislike their products. They don't fit right and don't last. As far as quality is concerned - you do get what you pay for. Spend a little extra on a part now and it will save you tearing it down again to replace again it in the near future.

I got them from Advance Auto, they really don't even have a name on the front, they are in a red and blue box and it says they are distributed by a place in Indiana, and is a division of Federal Mogul. Still not sure if I want to take 'em back or not now.
johnnyr Feb 23rd, 01, 9:33 PM Personally I would not use a Bearing made in China on my car. What would it cost to replace a spindle in your car or even worse your Car after a wreck? They do not last very long from what I have seen, A set lasted a friend less than a Year on his Daily Driver

IGOTTA71 Feb 24th, 01, 9:38 PM Snydes, It's up to you, I have sold hundreds of those bearings over the last few years, and have had no complants. I have them on my car also, and I refuse to use junk. This is on the 2nd Chevelle I've had, and I used them on the other one also, with no goofy wear or other problems. It is your car, and I never recommend a customer buying something that he or she is not comefortable with, but my experience has always been positive with these bearings.
snydes Feb 25th, 01, 8:26 AM Well I took them back and got Federal Moguls, the doubt I had about the cheaper bearings wasn't worth $15 to me.
68ElCamino Feb 25th, 01, 6:00 PM Hey Snydes, good move to take those back.
I'm going through a brake changeover and front suspension rebuild also. Finding all the parts among the chain auto parts stores is time consuming and a more costly, but there will not be 1 part from any 3rd world sweatshops on it.
