: GC Steering Box Conversion - Do I have a different column?

I went to convert to the Grand Cherokee steering box in my 67 Chevelle and my intermediate shaft appears to be short now. The car has a tilt colum in it. Here are a couple pics of what I am faced with. The end of the shaft closest to the firewall was just bolted in place and was not splined.....seems a little scary. I am trying to figure which direction to go next. Extend intermediate shaft and redrill hole? Any ideas or info would be appreciated.

The 67 does not have an intermediate shaft, it is all one piece. Someone has modified yours and it does not look very safe. I have a 67 column in the shop if you would like a photo of the lower portion let me know.

Thanks Philip.....I was thinking the same thing....scary unsafe. Any pics would be appreciated. You can e-mail them to craig_tomeo@yahoo.com. Might have to look at aftermarket columns or find a nice rebuilt one. I really like the tilt this one has though.

I'll go take a photo and post it, give me about 10 minutes to get it done.
Do you have a 67 column that is cut off or is it a later model with the double D shaft? If it is a later model you can just add a factory type intermediate shaft. BRB

Thanks Philip...I really appreciate the help. It looks like I have bits and pieces of what I should. Here are a couple pics of what I have. It is a tilit column which makes me wonder if it is original. Looking at your pics, I wonder if I am missing the coupler between the column and the intermediate shaft. What do you think?

I am not sure what you have. It is not a 67 column, or at least I don't think it is. Not even sure if it is a GM column because of the splined end. The GM columns with a splined shaft for the intermediate shaft used a pinch bolt type attachment. Later models used a double D with a bolt through the shaft. You may be correct in assuming it is a mix of parts from various vehicles. It could be a 67 column with a later shaft inserted and a hole drilled into it.

Here is a splined shaft and the attachment bolt
