: Short vs. Long push rod - '69 Chevelle

Alright, I see multiple posts on this topic ... but can't find one to answer my question.

I'm rebuilding a '69 M/C & Booster for my Chevelle. The cylinder originally had a short pushrod piston.

How hard is it to convert to a long rod on my booster? Micky Hale rebuilt mine, and I believe he said I would just have to yank (I don't remember) ... Does that sound right? And, who would have a longer rod to replace mine?

I see that '72+ years used the short rod. Would it be safe to buy a AutoZone one for '72, and put the piston in from that ... Or, are there other differences.

I figure something from '69 had to have used a shorter pushrod ... I believe mine is originally from a GTO. Is it possible BOP's used short one's?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Neal

69's should have had a long rod in them. My 70 (power disc) has the short one in it. You have to use the rod that goes with that master cylinder. If you put a short rod in where a long rod belongs, you will not have brakes. If you do the opposite, you will not be able to bolt the master cylinder on. My advice is put it back the way it came apart.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong ... I know the two can't be mixed/matched.

What I am trying to figured out is how to change my booster to a long push rod (match my M/C)? And, who would have a spare?

Like I was saying ... I thought when I got it rebuilt, they said just yank on it. Is that the case? And, where would I find the long one to replace it?

Thanks, Neal

I went from a long to a short when I did the disc brake conversion on my '68. I used my original booster and a '75 Camaro master cylinder. The booster was irrelevant. I just cut the rod down to the length I needed and rounded the end.

I'd say that if you need a long rod, visit the junkyard and get one. There should be something around with that rod for a buck or two.

If not, check the ID of your rod and buy a piece of steel rod. Cut it to length and round off the ends. Not much to it.

Neal Its easy. Just pull the rod out of the booster. There should be an "O" ring on the end of the pushrod. Make sure its there when you put it back or a vacuum leak will occur.

Reinsert your different pushrod the opposite way and you're done graemlins/beers.gif
