: Fuel drain back into oil?

Hi,
I don’t know if it is supposed to do this, but I notice after starting the car and then turning it off, the gas stays in the fuel filter housing (I have a glass housing for the in-line filter). After 3-4 days, I go out and there is no more gas and is dry as a bone in the housing and must have drain back down to the fuel pump. Is it supposed to do this? Did it go into the oil? What causes this? I have a Qjet and 406sbc in my '72 Chevelle.

Thanks,
Ethan

I'd say that's normal. It's not getting into the oil unless something is wrong with the pump. And if there was, it would happen much sooner.

It MAY be evaporating; it's more likely that it's siphoning back into the fuel tank because the check valves in the fuel pump are seeping.

I'd consider vacuum-testing the pump. Connect a vacuum gauge to the fuel pump inlet; run the engine on the fuel in the carb bowl. The pump should pull vacuum, and HOLD vacuum for a minute or two after the car runs out of gas.

If it won't hold vacuum--the pump is junk.

If you didn't have a transparent filter you probably wouldn't have a problem, as long as it isn't causing a starting problem. (a thinly veiled way of saying I bet tons of em do this)
