: 30-50% off on snap-on tools
brabbit50422 May 23rd, 09, 7:44 AM i just started school at UTI in norwood mass. its an awsome school so far and i get 50% off on almost everything snap-on has. so basically if you want snap-on start hanging out in UTI parking lots and make some friends. also if anyone in my area wants something let me know maybe we can work somethin out. :beers:
Racing May 23rd, 09, 8:51 AM Snap-On gives the same discount to many technical school and colleges. My son received the same discount after enrolling in Technical College, Manhattan, KS.
brabbit50422 May 23rd, 09, 8:56 AM yeah they were saying that apparently we get the second best discounts in the world besides the millitary. the guy came in and was telling everyone about the stuff he sells and a bunch of kids were asking about prices. when he told them it was 2200 bucks for an empty box a couple guys just about hit the floor. I already knew the deal though nice stuff but even at a discount its not cheap.
1badss396 May 23rd, 09, 9:30 AM Even at 50% off you will need to spend atlest $15,000:yes:
Racing May 23rd, 09, 9:35 AM :noway: No, You can get a pretty well rounded tool box for half that.
Dean May 23rd, 09, 9:36 AM They are still 10 times higher than Craftsman. :D
Bowtie-72 May 23rd, 09, 10:11 AM I don't think we want to get into that debate Dean. Craftsman is decent stuff and easy to replace, but all the professional mechanics I have worked with won't use Craftsman for wrenches or sockets. They say the tolerance is too loose and they can strip bolts easier.
brabbit50422 May 23rd, 09, 10:14 AM its true we have all snap-on at school and i have all crafstman at home they work but you can feel the difference right away.

Well naturally, they have to say something (anything) derogatory to justify paying those kind of prices.
I'm sure there must be something better about a $15,000.00 tool chest opposed to a $300.00 tool chest. :D
BTW, I do love Snap On tools too.
brans72 May 23rd, 09, 9:53 PM I got that same deal when I was in college take full advantage of it Trust pay now or PAY later. Brandon
71350SS May 23rd, 09, 9:59 PM I would check with your snap-on dealer. I think that 50% might be a one time deal, at least that was the deal for a couple of recent tech school grads that I know. Those tools are a great investment, 25 to 30 yrs from now you'll be glad you bit the bullit.
Schurkey May 24th, 09, 3:13 AM :noway: No, You can get a pretty well rounded tool box for half that.
Heck, I got a great tool box for only 5K.
Oh, you meant the tool box WITH the tools...
They are still 10 times higher than Craftsman. :D
Not always. Sometimes less than double. Way less than double. And sometimes not.
What I know is that I could reliably loosen fasteners and fittings with Snap-On tools that had often resulted in damage--to the tool or to the fitting--when I used Craftsman or similar quality stuff.
I also know that I saw a lot less of my own blood when I used quality tools instead of second-through-tenth-rate stuff. Considering the cost of time off work and medical care, quality tools are a bargain.
brabbit50422 May 24th, 09, 5:27 PM when he came in to our class i actually asked about the one shot deal kind of thing he told me as long as i was enrolled i got the student discount. we also get 1200-1500 bucks towards tools when we get out and some stuff you get a coupon back like a 54 inch box you get 400 bucks back in the form of a coupon. but still if you only have a craftsman set like me with not much in it and you start lookin at it all its a bit overwhelming but then again ive done front coilovers disc brakes an engine swap and a trans install with what i got so i guess its not to bad but im sure these new cars will throw some curveballs once i get going.
Chris R May 26th, 09, 8:07 PM When I was in tech school there was a specific list that first year students bought, you entered school and were recommended to buy at least the first year list. I guess the instructors and tool companys got together years before that to form a first year list and a second year list so you were sure to get all the appropiate tools. It made total sense given the type of education the student may have been going after. An automotive student wouldnt have body hammers on his list and the body students wouldnt have things like brake tools on thier lists. However, students were still able to buy more stuff that wasnt on the list. I made sure to take advantage big time when I was in school and picked up extra air tools, swivel sockets, a nice digital volt meter, and the best timing light they had. Although Mac was offering a touch more tools on thier list then Snap On. All the tool lists were already pre priced and were about the same.
When I was in school back in the mid 90s. Mac would let you use your student discount as many times as you wanted. Snap On was a one shot deal. This is why I have mostly Mac tools. I know this is changed since then. I also know that these discounts arent available on big ticket items like Scan Tools or the big tool boxes.
If I wanted, I could go back to my school and sign up for 1 shop credit and be a student for a few weeks just to get the student discount again.
1badss396 May 26th, 09, 8:15 PM I am happy with my Craftsman tools and my stainless steel tool box.
It built my 69 convertible and has not failed me yet.
Bowtie-72 May 27th, 09, 11:56 AM A close friend went to the same tech school ChrisR did (maybe even at the same time), he graduated top of class and got a bunch of free stuff from the school, as well as a really nice multimeter, watch, and a tool buying credit.
BlueSS454 May 27th, 09, 9:35 PM They are still 10 times higher than Craftsman. :D
And still well worth the money  The quality od Snap-On tools is better than anything else out there.
I also had the same type of discount deal when I was going to the Tech School for collision repair.
mrfuzzy May 28th, 09, 2:07 PM i bought a new 3 piece snap on box 32 years ago. at that time i thought the price was crazy (about $1200.00). still have it, and plenty of snap on tools. you get what you pay for.
brabbit50422 May 28th, 09, 5:10 PM I talked with the guy today its unlimited as to what i want to buy and the only thing we had to get going in was a multi meter. we got it for 120 bucks but i guess it retails for about 400. I have heard that other schools require a tool set but my school provides all tools required. on a side note i broke a snap-on flathead screwdriver today in half, never done that to a crafstman bent but not snapped. snap-on snap-off i guess. the school rep did replace it immediatly though.
JWagner May 29th, 09, 10:23 AM Snap-on tools are really nice and are widely accepted in the industry. However, it does not mean that each and every tool they make is the best. There are exceptions. I worked for an outboard motor manufacturer that had con rod screws that could not be successfully tightened with Snap-on sockets. It required an Apex socket. Apex makes those nasty looking black oxide coated tools used in assembly plants. Specifically, the task was to tighten a 5/16 twelve point screw to 32 lbs-ft.
71 monte ss Jul 7th, 09, 8:55 PM Until you get some money behind you, keep workin with the crafsman tools, but any new tools you should go with the snap-on. On a side note, alot of the guys from the school live in the apartments at Norwest woods as a cop friend told me thier cars are always the loudest in the neighborhood !!! Keep up the hard work good mechanics are hard to find.
brabbit50422 Jul 10th, 09, 5:36 AM Yea they tell us that at school that the cops know we are there and that we are a bunch of idiots so please don't do stupid stuff to make the rest of us look bad. The funny thing is you know exactly who they are talking to when they say that to. Also I just started a job at a sears auto center while I'm in school and I like it allot I don't do allot of different stuff but I'm catching on quick and seem to have a knack for it.
