: QA1 Coilover Springs and Shocks installed.
airrj Oct 31st, 04, 12:21 AM I just installed my new QA1 Coilover Springs and Shocks (http://www.qa-one.com/shocks/procoilsystems.html). (Thanks Keith graemlins/thumbsup.gif ) And I just wanted to everyone know how great these things drive.
The combo that I replaced was 300 lbs./in. springs and new Napa Gas shocks. I believe that the new springs are 365/465 lbs./in. variable rate. The car currently has 235/75/15 radials for tires so I can't really corner well yet, but the new combo was still noticable immediately.
The front end of the car felt tighter. And even though I went up on the spring rate it still rode very well. Overall I was very impressed imediately and I still have allot of work to do to get the car up to the same level are the spring/shock combo.

BillsCamino Oct 31st, 04, 12:31 AM Very  , RJ!
I put the "R" series on the front of my '70 about a month ago. Initially went with the small block springs but quickly realized I needed the BB version...same spring & rating as yours.
I really like this setup. smile.gif
Nice handling on the street and so far, testing shows I lowered my 60' times at the strip.
I've still got the small block springs if anyone's interested...
6t7vert Oct 31st, 04, 10:56 AM Bill, do you have a BB ?? If not why the need for BB springs with a small block ??
I am considering this route and have a small block.
Thanks
dukejoh Oct 31st, 04, 11:43 AM Hey,
How easy is it to adjust that little knob with the setup installed. I have been considering going this route also.

scottysalesman Oct 31st, 04, 1:25 PM Can you adjust the ride height if you want the lowered look or does it make the car sit higher in front?
airrj Oct 31st, 04, 6:50 PM Bill,
I haven't had any time to drive the car hard. But it is a night and day difference from the stock setup.
Caleb,
The adjusting knob is right out in the open. It is very easy to adjust. I will try to post some as installed photos tomorrow.
Scotty,
Yes you can adjust the ride height fairly easily. If you look in the photo, the round piece is a pair of shims and a Torrington bearing. And so all you need to do to adjust the ride height is use a spanner wrench to turn the threaded collars up or down.

I was wrong...
KAA Oct 31st, 04, 11:05 PM (Thanks Keith graemlins/thumbsup.gif ) You're welcome!! smile.gif
You may have already discovered this but I found it easier to turn the nut with the suspension unloaded.

Caleb,
Here is a photo of them installed. The knob is fairly easy to get to. With the tire off it is extrememly easy. With the tire on and on the ground, you will need to lay down and reach up in there, but not difficult at all. This photo is in the parking lot at work, and I could reach in and adjust them without a problem.

TurboLark Nov 2nd, 04, 10:06 AM Here is a pic of my 65 Skylark with the QA1's up front. I have the BB springs and the adjusters at the lowest adjustment. Just so you can see the effect.

The motor in this car is lght and small(300ci v8)and it rides really soft with the shocks at setting number 1. I still need to change the settings to get my firmer ride.
1966_L78 Nov 2nd, 04, 12:12 PM RJ,
Are you updating your website???
airrj Nov 2nd, 04, 2:45 PM Yes Tony I have allot of photos for the web. We finally got summer here in Buffalo about the second week in September. So once the snow flys I will put the car away and give some updates.
BTW the snow if forcasted for Sat. graemlins/hurray.gif graemlins/clonk.gif
chuck240z Nov 3rd, 04, 11:41 AM What did you pay for the setup you got on your car airrj. I just got some eibach springs, do you know if you can use coil overs with them. Im new to the suspension world, im tired of crappy rides.
doggy69 Nov 3rd, 04, 6:05 PM You think the set is worth $415? I'm seriously thinking bout it

Very pleased with the ride and handling. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

You cant use the eibachs for coilovers. The spring on the coilovers is tapered. It is small diameter at the bottom, with full size at the top. Well worth the money considering the cost of normal springs and a good adjustable shock.
Rich-L79 Nov 3rd, 04, 7:50 PM Is $415 the price? Can you get a similar set up for the rear?
TurboLark Nov 3rd, 04, 7:56 PM $457.00 thru Summit. The rear you would have to fab up something to work.
72_Chevelle Nov 3rd, 04, 8:38 PM When running coil overs in the rear. Does that allow you to run a little of a wider tire then since the shock is relocated.
Does anyone have this set up on their chevelle?

Does anyone have this set up on their chevelle? I think the wheelwell and frame still get in the way.
airrj Nov 4th, 04, 12:22 PM I bought mine used so I am not exactly sure of the retail price for them. But if it is $450 and you are looking for a really nice setup I would go for it.
No you can't use stock type springs with the coilover setup, however I would bet that you could get a QA1 shock to replace the stock ones. You could check with them.
As far as the rears, no they don't make a coilover setup specifically for the any vehicle. They offer coilover springs and shocks, but it would take some fabrication to get it done. And I believe that TurboLark is correct that the frame and wheelwell will be the limiting factor for the rear tire. But I have a 295/45-18 that I will have on the rear of my '72. That is an 11" wide tire. I'm happy with that.

ricks_67 Nov 4th, 04, 4:55 PM Here is where I bought my front set up. I haven't installed them yet because I'm doing some work on my lower control arm. He does sell a kit for the rears check out the sellers other items. It contains all the hardware to install on the frame, some welding needs to be done. They are drop shipped right from QA1. He charges a percentage if you use Paypal. They are very good to deal with and he is a distributor for QA1.
