Any tips on replacing the front seal with the timing cover still on my 396? I just completed a cam and intake swap with repaint and the only leak is my front seal. I really don't want to remove the timing cover because the paint turned out great and no other leaks at all. When I had the cover off to install the new seal I think I tweaked the seal a bit.
Thanks, Jody

if you don't have one, get a seal puller. the seal will pop righto ut without scratching the paint or denting the cover.
to put the new on in, either use a piece of pipe or a socket that is the same size as the seal and pound it it. if you don't have any pipe or a big socket, i've used two short pieces of 2X4- on opposite sides on the seal- to spread the blows and avoid warping the seal.
while it's apart, look at the part of the balancer that rides against the seal. if it has a groove on it, get a repair sleeve for it. they aren't that expensive and can be bought anywhere.
