: 71 Convertible Project on eBay
danmay21 May 20th, 09, 3:49 AM Hey guys,
I was hoping to get some insite and advice about this car. I have emailed back and forth with the seller a few times and will probably talk to him tomorrow about specifics about the car. Here's a little of what I do know though.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150346066303&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem
This car was on eBay a few weeks ago, went for $6900. Apparently the top bidder had some problem with shipping being too high and backed out.
He said he'd sell me the car and end the auction for 6K.
So here's some questions for you guys.
What price should I offer back, what's it worth?
How much would the parts cost to make this thing suitable to be a driving project? Fixing the brakes, some floors probably, a cheap top for the time being, etc.
Finally, if I decide this is the car that will be my project for the next 5-7 years, is there anyone around there that could go take a look at it and see if it's worth owning?
Thanks in advance for all the help, you guys are far more evolved in the chevelle world.

BigBocks66SS May 20th, 09, 8:50 AM Just the fact that it came from Michigan, would make me leave it alone. I can see where someone has allready patched the floors with sheetmetal and rivets, I bet every panel on it including all floors and braces will have to be replaced, not to mention the condition of the frame. I don't know, unless you are pretty handy with body work, and don't have to pay someone else to perform this, then you might be OK, it would be an expensive project for sure.JMHO
JChilders May 20th, 09, 12:32 PM I have seen nicer cars for less. I have been looking for a 72 convert project for about a year. I would walk away from this one.
danmay21 May 20th, 09, 1:23 PM Thanks guys,
The more I look over the pictures, the more I realize it will be a more serious project than I'm looking to start with, and willing to spend 5-6K on. I am pretty handy with all of this stuff, even though this is my first restoration project. Looks like I'll need to keep looking for a better base for my project. Hopefully we don't start fighting for the same car :).

FLASHED May 20th, 09, 1:32 PM With the amount of cash it would take to fix that car you could find a finished car. A while back Chuck Hanson had a nice convert for sale for under 20000 for a nice driver. I dont know if he still has it but I would do that route before doing a major project.
vern May 20th, 09, 4:27 PM That car has some serious rust on it. You will find way more underneath. All the sheetmetal is available but it is a lot of work. He wont sell it cheap enough for it to be worth it. It looks like the inner rockers are shot along with the rear quarters.
savage71chevelless May 20th, 09, 7:34 PM Is it an original SS car, or just have the guage package option? I love the car and would love to have it if I had the room. I always wanted to have a convertible Nevada Silver 71 to match my hardtop
Malibulvr May 20th, 09, 11:38 PM I don't think you could drive that thing, just tear it down and spend a butt load of money on it. For the money and its a convertible, 4500 wouldn't be to crazy but you have to realize that every piece of steel on that car is garbage. I'm sure the radiator support and probably frame may have issues also.
Stalkingbear May 21st, 09, 12:10 AM Well, heck....... ummmmm.... just wanted to say his favorite word..... heck.

I have to agree. These cars didn't hold up to the road salt very well and this one looks pretty rusty in all the usual places. Most likely all the body panels are gone and the trunk pan as well. You'll spend alot of time and money getting that car back in shape. On the plus side, it sounds like the car is nicely equipped so if you were to restore it, you'd have a sharp nicely optioned convertible.
mr 4 speed May 21st, 09, 8:17 AM I looked at a 72 convertible project that was a heck of a lot nicer than that car for about the same money! ($6500)
I wouldn't want to pay much more than $3000 for the one on ebay..

I have to agree. I am suprised there is anything left. My first car was a 70 that had 30000 Michigan miles in 78 and it had holes in the front fenders already. I would bet the first guy that bought it backed out when he saw how bad it was.
KMR May 21st, 09, 11:27 AM Looks like that car has been sitting way too long in a bad climate..... There is a lot work to be done on top of $6K. I'd pass
Herb396 May 21st, 09, 12:22 PM You'd be better off buying a solid Arizona frame somewhere and then purchasing everything else new,,,bet it would be less money in the project
Brucebodyman May 21st, 09, 2:32 PM I saw that car on the Michigan craigslist month's ago talked to the then owner car could have been had then for $3500 and I thought that was to much. I think this guy bought it and is flipping it or it's the same guy and thinks it's worth more money now. either way that car is VEEERY rusty. hold out for a better car.
bigskycountry May 21st, 09, 3:03 PM The time, and money needed to bring this car back to life would discourage, and dishearten, any individual short of owning their own shop, and having an unlimited supply of man hours, and capital. I can appreciate the dream, but truly understand the nightmare of trying to restore a car that becomes a money pit on wheels. Far too many cars available at his asking price, in far better condition.
Brucebodyman May 21st, 09, 6:26 PM I found my notes from when i called on it. i talked to the original owners son at least 3 months ago it was in Royal Oak MI then my notes say 3500 OBO and after seeing pics I passed.

Well there you have it, let it die!
