: Hotchkis front swaybar
MARINA66SS Dec 10th, 03, 11:34 AM Has anyone installed one with problems? I have a 1966 chevelle and last night I tried to put it on and the original mounting holes are much closer than the mounting brackets that they give you from hotchkis. I would say at least a half in or so I don't see any room to "squash" it that far to get it to fit. I was thinking of redrilling and tapping the frame. Did anyone else do this to get it to fit? The hotchkis web site say 1964-1972 so it should fit. Thanks for the help.
crowenate Dec 10th, 03, 11:46 AM I am a hotchkis dealer, and I havent heard of any problems yet,did you install the pass side bracket first?Oh make sure you put some good synthetic grease on the buching inside and out.If you still have trouble cal this number and someone there should be able to help 877-4no-roll.Goodluck.
MARINA66SS Dec 10th, 03, 11:53 AM Well just by holding it up there it is to wide. if you put one bolt in and make it sit level on the frame you can't even see the other bolt hole. I don't believe they are sprung either because it barely goes over the rubber part. thanks I will try calling them and see what they say.
crowenate Dec 10th, 03, 4:22 PM It sounds to me like they sent you the wrong part if it is that much off. When you talk to them let me know what the deal was incase I eveer have a customer run into the same thing.
MARINA66SS Dec 12th, 03, 6:56 AM Well I called hotchkis and told the person the problem and they said i have to squash the brackets which i will try i guess but it seems like a lot to me.
EddieF Dec 12th, 03, 8:10 AM I don't know if this is helpful, but I got a 1 1/8" sway bar from NPD, I don't know, it could be the same bar. Anyway, I encountered the same thing, but just put both bolts in loosely, and just went back and forth tightening each one, and once the bolts were tight enough that they had to get more flush with the bracket, they just squeezed the bushing. I don't think I explained that very well, but at first I didn't think there was any way those bolts would end up straight, but they did. Ed.
CDN SS Dec 12th, 03, 11:28 PM Yes this is a problem
I just got my 1 3/8" Hotchkiss sway bar and no way you can squeeze bracket to fit the stock holes on a 66 ... looks like I will have to drill one new hole although that could be a problem since frame not flat where new hole has to go
crowenate Dec 13th, 03, 12:34 PM I will call Mark at hotchkis monday and tell him about this problem and see what he suggests.Ill let you all know what he says when I talk to him.Sorry you all are having those problems. :(
CDN SS Dec 13th, 03, 11:23 PM Nathan ... I doubt they can do anything, pretty hard to replace a 7/8 bar with a 1 3/8 and expect the bracket to use the same holes, the bushings are just too big, if you sqeeze the bracket it distorts the bushing... but if they have a solution I 'll wait before I drill
Bill
crowenate Dec 13th, 03, 11:30 PM Bill,
Id say your right but I.d wait just in case,Ill call them as soon as they open monday and find out and Ill let you all know as soon as I hang up with him.
crowenate Dec 16th, 03, 12:46 PM Hey,
Sorry I didnt get this posted yesterday, but its not much of a help anyway,he said you just have to squeeze the brackets together, you might have to take the brackets and put them up to the mounting holes first without the sway bar and that will give you a idea of how much you need to squeeze them,If you have to you can use a c-clamp or somthing like that to squezze them together.I hope this works, goodluck.
