Hello All,

I have replaced the transmission on my 70 ss from a Saginaw to a Muncie M-21

My existing clutch kit that was with the Saginaw was a 10.5 inch kit.

I have been told that a 10.5 inch clutch is to small behind a 454.

Is this true? Does anybody know what size clutch came out of the factory with a 454 and an M-21?

If I go to a bigger clutch do I need to change the flywheel?

Thanks,

Bob

11" clutch on most all Chevelle 4 speed cars from my understanding. You will just have to check your current flywheel to see if it's big enough to change over to an 11".

Did you know that a L88 came with a 10.4 inch clutch???? I wonder if it was to small:noway::noway::noway::noway:

There are nearly as many myths about clutches as there are about M22s.

If you use you car for street driving a 10.4 should be enough.

The ZL1 Camaro had the 403 bell housing and a 10.5 clutch.

For a street machine, you will be fine. An 11 inch will not provide anything beneficial beyond a 10.5. If you were going after an 10 second quarter, that might be a different story.

Remember, a BBC WILL find the weak link in your drive train for you, if you ask it to, whether you are using a 10.5 or 11 inch clutch. That's one of the side benefits of running a big block ;-)
