Does anyone know why my 67 Chevelle SS has a popping noise when I put in reverse and back up?
It has done it in first gear also but almost always in reverse.
I have replaced the springs, top rubber spring mount, rear gears, boxed lower control arms, new bearings in rear end, upper and lower control arm bushings.
I can't see anything that has not been reworked and still I have this popping !
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
jr

JR,
Is the noise as you put it in reverse or while the car is rolling back? If you use two feet to torque the engine in reverse will it make the noise. Check your motor mounts and your u-joints.

Thanks John,
It makes the noise when I let the clutch out
to back up most of the time and sometime when I go forward. I have replaced the u-joints ,clutch, pressure plate, release bearing and installed a Muncie 4 speed.

I have not replaced the motor mounts yet, do you still think that they could be causing my noise ?
Thanks,

JR,
Yes,but only if the motor mounts have separated, its possible thats causing the noise.Take a look at the rubber between the motor mount plates. Is it cracked and broken? Also check for any metal to metal contact of the motor mount plates. If the pass side mount is gone it'll lift and clunk in reverse.Drivers mount will lift and clunk in drive or 1st.Oil soaked motor mounts causes the rubber to deteriate. If the mounts are OK thats probably not the cause of the noise, just move on and check the next piece.
You can still torque the engine with a stick, just set the E-brake tight and slightly slip the clutch while someone observes the motor from the FENDER side.
