I have a 1968 ss396 that didn't have a motor or tranny in it, I would like to get a motor with the right date code for it. The car was built the 3rd week of June according to the cowl tag. My question is, What would have been the estimated date code for the block and what casting #, 323 or 440? It is a manual car. Where might I find the build sheet hiden on this car?

The date on my block is the week before the date on the car. I believe a date within about 90 days is OK. From what I read a build sheet in a 68 is rare. Mine did not have one, it was built in Baltimore. You could check in the seats or in the doors. I believe some have even been found above the gas tank!

Mine was built in Atlanta.

Tony, Welcome, this info came from another post on the subject for build sheets.

Build sheets were not left hidden in the cars so we could find them 20-30 years later. They were suppose to be put in the trash but humans being humans stuffed them anywhere they could when a particular station was through with their position's assembly. Sometimes they were simply passing them along to the next station but more often it was just easier to stick them in the seat, under the carpet, in a door panel, in the headliner, stuffed up under the dash or on top the gas tank. Atlanta seems famous for the door panel area, Arlington for under the tar-like substance under the carpet.

Those records were of no use to GM and were not kept in archives somewhere. There is no real service that will recreate a build sheet, there are unscrupulous people that will make you a build sheet to read whatever you want and even 'age' it for you to make it appear real and purpose is generally to misrepresent a car.
