This is a non chevelle question but i have some squeaky brakes on my commuter car. The pads are close to new and they squeak with a little pressure. When you depress the pedal harder it goes away.
Is this just cheap pads the toyota dealer uses or how can I stop this?
I use brake (red or blue goop) anti-squeak on the surface on the backside of the pads where the caliper piston touches, and where the caliper touches.
The pads "dance" when you apply the brakes, and this seems to minimize the noise.
Black RTV will work also.

Some pads just make noise. The "track" pads offered by Wilwood, EBC, and Perf. Friction among others are just noisey pads. The better the pads bite, the more noise they make.

mike,
Late model toyota's use a metal shim(s) to control the noise generated by the brakes. After being on the car 30-40-50 thousand miles they tend to fall victim to rust failure. The good toyota pads come with new shims, the cheaper ones don't.Rotor surface is important too, take a good look at the rotor.

Dont know if it matters but this is a 2001 corolla with about 45000 miles

An 01 Corolla will have shims on the pads as OE.There should be 2 on the inboard pad and 1 on the outboard pad,IIRC.When you buy toyota pads there the OE type comes with all new hardware and shims. The lesser price just comes with pads.If a dealer did your brakes I'd bring it back.
