I am wondering if someone can educate me on the correct fan shroud for my '66 with a 283. I bought an after market one hard plastic/ABS but it did not even come close to fitting. Did the metal shroud go in '66 or '67 or both. I have an aftermarket radiator but stock core support. I currently do not have a shroud and my car does not run hot but I will need one for my new a/c unit. Thanks.

Your aftermarket radiator, is it small block type (rad cap in the middle) or Heavy duty (rad cap on driver's side) ? Or something else?

Small block type. The cap is in the middle.

I don't think this type of radiator ever came with a fan shroud. This may be what is giving you problems. I have never been down that road so I can't answer for sure.

That is correct...no shroud on a mild 283.
Does your radiator have a spacer between it and the rad support? If so, you can remove the spacer and gain some room for a shroud.
I just did this on my originally equipped 283/PG car...which now has a TH400 and a BB with clutch fan and aluminum two 1" row aftermarket radiator.

O.k., now that makes sense. I bought the car two years ago from the original owner and he told me when the car had a body off resto done in 2002, the motor was removed and rebuilt and he told me he did not remember having a shroud. The car heats up to @220 in stopped traffic on a hot summer day in Florida.

But with an a/c unit going in, I'm sure I'll need a shroud.

I've studied this recently and I understand that either with C60 or VO1(heavy duty radiator) the fan shroud was used. Small blocks (all) with these options recieved the metal shroud. The radiator had a dual flange to except this and also required more forward space thus eliminating the center shroud or extension piece between the rad. support and the radiator. Big blocks recieved a plastic (abs) shroud and mounted in the same way. There is no way to mount either shroud without the dual bracket radiator.

These are the facts as I understand them.:D

66-67 stock 283 & 327 factory AC , 3 row radiator used the factory fan shroud with a clutch fan. Radiator mounts directly to the radiator support with no spacer. HD cooling, 4 row mounts same with the small block. The correct radiator has double mounting flanges even the aftermarket if it is for factory AC.

Both of these radiators would have the rad cap on the drivers side, correct?

Filler cap would be in the center.

Don, that's a picture of a small block without shroud but with an extension shroud between the rad and rad support. If you raised your camara up another foot it would be much more helpful.:beers:

Brian, I have an original radiator and steel shroud from my 67 Malibu with A/C. If you're interested, send me a PM.

If you want correct componets, you need the fan clutch for the short water pump, the 5 blade fan with the small circle, the metal fan shroud/with brackets , radiator 30122519 unless you have an auto.

Got in this late, but I was thinking that the shroud that I have is the original after all. It looked homemade to me, but reading a couple of replies I see a metal shroud mentioned. This '66 has a 355 in it and I had taken the shroud off and start looking for the original - had the original all the time!
