Ive got a 8.2 10 bolt and want to know a little more about it. Its in a 1968 SS, and from what ive gathered only 12 bolts came in the SS cars. Anyways I can only find a few numbers on the rearend.

38757441 which is on the housing, front side to the left of the pinion, more toward the bottom, but not on the bottom.

L 14 6 is the other number which is on the back side of the housing near the cover in a valley.

Any other help of finding some numbers would be of help. If anyone would like picutres to see what i am talking about, ill email you them. Thanks! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I don't recognize the casting number as a Chevrolet 10 bolt, a 66 would be 3875744 and 67 would be 3894938. The casting date indicates it's a 1967; L146 = December 14, 1966. Maybe it is out of a Buick, Olds, or Pontiac A-body.

Where would any other numbers be on the rearend? Ive looked on the axle tubes but havent found anything yet. Anymore help would be great!

I think 64el_camino64 added an extra "1" to the end of the casting number! Without that 1, the number is correct for a 1966 10-bolt.

Look for a stamped code on the front of the passenger side axle tube 3-6" out from the center section. Should read something like LA1220B which decodes as: LG = 3.08 10-bolt positraction, 12 = December, 20 = 20th day, B = Buffalo axle assembly plant. Yours should be similar.

Good catch, Dave! I must not be awake, yet! :D The extra 1 on the end could be part of a N which is found at the end of many of the casting numbers. But, then the L146 is suspect; could the L be something else, or the 6 is actually a 5?

I have some pictures that i can email anyone that might be as confused as i am. There is a 1, which would be like a 8 digit part number at the end. Ill send any pictures if necessary.
