Hi all -

Is there updated information regarding the mystery codes on cowl tags on the 3rd line, after the date code and sequence number? I know these codes are often factory-specific. I'm trying to figure out a 70 cowl tag. The car has special-order paint, and below the "- -" on the 3rd line after the date code and sequence number is a "Z". This is a kansas City built car.

Anyone have info on this?

No, those are internal plant Ident numbers and don't give any clue to options.

Kansas City was a big GMAD assembly complex and had one management that controlled all operations. Leeds as it was called (for name of suburb) had lines for other GM divisions as well and all these codes kept everything in line or else things would have been all screwed up.

Thanks for the reply. But there are some instances where those numbers designate certain options, correct? Like in the case of Z11 or Z25?

Yes but only on Canadian (Oshawa) built Chevelles I believe. U.S. Chevelles from 68 on only listed trim (seat) type/color/material and exterior paint as far as options go. The letter "Z" is something I haven't seen before. I've seen "L" on quite a few KC tags and either "B" or "D" (sometimes both) on Baltimore tags.
