Hey guys, working on the rear brakes for my 70 Chevelle, and came across this thing. It has fuel lines running into it looks like from both sides of the tank, and then lines coming up to the front of the car. I see one of them in the front, it isn't connected to anything, and comes up around where the brake proportioning valve is mounted on the frame in the front.

This piece is mounted just forward of the fuel tank up in the hump for the rear end travel.

Here is a pic so you guys can guess at it. For my knowledge it doesn't actually do anything as far as I know at least. I have a mech fuel pump on the motor. Just wondering what it is, thanks guys.

Oh, and dont mind the dead spiders, the car sat outside a while and i'm getting it back on the road.

All of the tank vents hook up there even the canister from the front runs back to it if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, that is what the lines running into it appear to be. So is that it, just some kind of junction for the tank vents then? It says Rochester on it.

Interesting! I have always seen this part or a version of it up inside trunk just behind the rear seat. Does yours have it or something like it behind the seat in the trunk area? My BB SS 71 Elco has a version of it above the fuel tank not visable unless you pull tank.

A small carbon canister? Holds fumes until you start the car and then engine vacuum burns the fumes through the combustion process maybe? Or maybe a junction block for the tank vents?

Here is a closeup of what is on there, a little bigger to make it easier to see. No idea what it is really, going to check the assembly manual later on today, maybe that will tell me.

The car has California emissions on it, this is the 70 version of the vapor/fuel/rollover seperator valve. 71-72 have a different version that sits vertically behind the rear seat. Once upon a time there was a charcoal canister under the hood.

Ahhh, makes sense now! And yes, it is a california car, and I am located in CA still. Makes sense about the charcoal canister since one of the lines that leaves this thing heads up to the engine compartment. Thanks a ton guys for the help!
