: 396/350 HP Cast Iron Intake
Birddog1970 May 14th, 09, 5:46 PM I'm putting a 70 396/350 motor (non-#'s matching) into my 70 SS. I'm going for the "correct" look and have a question regarding the intake. In the front of the intake I have the Bypass Hose Nipple (Drivers side) but there is also another nipple just next to it on the front passenger side. Additionally I have the fitting that goes on top of the intake for the heater hose.
I confused as to what the passenger side nipple is? Should this be blocked off? If I recall the number on the intake is 3965287.
Thanks,
Dave
osdmike May 14th, 09, 6:30 PM Are You sure itīs 3965287 ?
I found this:
3955287 , 402/454 , 1970-71 , Q-jet , Oval port LS-3/LS-5

Heater hose connection????
704EVER May 14th, 09, 7:40 PM Here's a picure for you, maybe this helps.
oman May 14th, 09, 8:02 PM Are you are saying there is another spot on the manifold (obscured by the fuel line)? For all the times I have looked at these engines I don't necessarily recall how the hoses are laid out.
The hose that runs to the upper side of your intake manifold MIGHT be in a position that is not for a heater hose. It seems to me that the heater hoses always ran to the front of the manifold and to the pump. Perhaps (just perhaps) that top side location where the hose now goes is for some sort of sensor for water temp not for a heater hose? In 1970 and 1971 they went NUTS with sensors to try to meet emissions ..perhaps that location is supposed to have a long gone sensor? it might just be that it is the location for a guage sensor or it could be some other do-dad that was emissions related.
I just looked at some of my BBC parts. I have an L-78 intake manifold (from a crate 454 but it is the same manifold) that has a location for a water outlet just where your manifold has one hose attached. Gm seems to have added thse water jacket "ports" to some manifolds and not supplied them on others. Perhaps your intake is a service replacement??
I think that you need to have that hose currently routed to the manifold top relocated to the intake manifold front. It might be that a temp sensor goes in the place where the hose is now attached to the manifold.

Birddog1970 May 15th, 09, 2:21 PM Thanks for the pics. Those that have the 3955287 cast iron intake for your 70, can you see if you have a water jacket port that is blocked off next to the one where your intake hose connects to the water pump? Looking through some other pics on the site I see some of the 66/67 motors utilize both water jacket ports on the front of the intake (appears not to have the one on the top).
I guess I'll have to block off the left water jacket port (gotta find the right item to do so) since it seems everyone is utilizing the ports like the pics above
704EVER May 15th, 09, 6:34 PM Birddog, is this what you're talking about? I have an extra manifold in the garage and here's a picture of it. The fitting on the passenger side needs to blocked with a plug and I'll open the one on the top that currently has the plug in it on the passenger side when I use it. Maybe this helps you. PS I believe the fuel line is blocking the site of the plug in the picture I posted for you above.
704EVER May 15th, 09, 6:42 PM Here you go, I dug around and found another picture for you. Here's a shot of the plug, just to the left of the fuel line.
Birddog1970 May 15th, 09, 7:21 PM 704EVER,
That is exactly what I'm talking about. The manifold I have currently has an inlet on both ports in the front and on top of the manifold.
Any thoughts on where I can pickup a plug to block off that left port?
I'm going to be cleaning up and painting my intake soon for the motor build and want to ensure everything is setup first
Thanks!
Dave
704EVER May 15th, 09, 7:37 PM Dave, I'm not sure who has them but try the usual parts stores or maybe even a place like a plumbing supply store. Glad to be of help.
