It's time for an upgrade! :hurray:I considered re-building my stock 327, but wanted more power and reliability. I also heard that the costs involved to rebuild the 327 are nearly the same as buying a new engine.
I've seen plenty of good deals on complete (turn-key or close to turn-key) 383's, and all of my friends have their own opinion on whats the best. I was wondering if those of you who run 383's can give me some advice. I'm looking for around 400hp and I'd like to keep my costs below $6,000. Any recommendations are welcome!

I would look at a GM replacement if this is a stocker, you can get a fast burn 385 with warrantee for around $5600. An Edelbrock performer 410HP 350 for about $6200. Stick with a quality name company that stands behind their products.

As stupid as this sound's, a 383 MOPAR!!
2.08"/1.72" valves.
And can probably get a good one out of an old Chrysler for peanuts including the good 727 tranny!
BUT it won't be a Chevy 383!
Also try Jaspers.

I don't know how much more reliable you're going to get than a 327.
And it definitely shouldn't be more expensive to rebuild a 327 than buy an entire new engine.
You can rebuild the 327, add dart heads, cam, intake manifold and easily get 400 hp.
Another option, which is what I'm doing for a dragster I just bought is a late model LT1.
Any late model LT1 from a Corvette, Camaro, Firebird, Impala SS, Caprice, Roadmaster, Police Car, etc.
New rings, maybe bearings, gaskets, paint orange, get GM performance parts intake manifold, carburetor, distributor, non-emissions camshaft and you'll have a very inexpensive and reliable 400 hp.
Both of these options should be way under $6000.
