Just wondering if anybody else has seen this. I just picked up a nice 70 402 # 854 4bolt block on the deck is stamped 0A60880 and thats it. The numbers are on the right side of pad and are clear but the left side of pad is blank no assembly date or engine code......nothing. Any ideas?????

Looks to be a replacement
My bet is the complete number you found should be
CE0A60880
CE - Chevrolet Engine (used to ID engines or parts of used for service)

Never seen a CE block with another letter in it though; but who knows why things get stamped the way they do.

Maybe he will check it more closely and get with us. I admit that I was guessing as its hard to come up with an answer with so little to go on.
I have heard that others have found CE codes with a letter in them similar to this but I have not seen the actual code with my own eyes.
A picture always helps with engine codes as they are very often misread.

Yeah, GM never sticks to one policy for very long. No telling what's been stamped on replacement blocks or there may be a newer 'Service Bulletin' that nobody's seen yet. Agree a picture is always worth a 1000 words. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Begining in 1970,upon completion of the regular CE serial numbers,a plant reused CE numbers preceded by the letter "A" to indicate Late production.
Example: CE0A12345
Flint Plant used if need be:
A00001-A19999 & A80001-A89999 for L6 engines.
A20000-A49999 & A90000-A99999 for V8 engines.
Tonawanda Plant used if need be:
A50000-A79999 for their V8 engines.
They continued this practice throughout the 1970's,so when you find a block numbered like this, look at the number after the CE suffix to determine the year..i.e. CE3A12345 for 1973.

Tonawanda and Flint V-8 each made around 5500 engines per day (one every twelve seconds)

I cleaned the pad up better with a scuff wheel and in front of the 0 I can just make out part of what appears to be the top 40% of an E u can see the top horizontal line and just a bit of the vertical line coming down.....no second horizontal line.. the first 0 is also faint ,so from this and the info above it probably is CE0A60880 just the CE portion was a little light. The block is also a late 1970 dated F-3-70 so it would make sense as MR70 said the A was then used.........THANX to all............
