you need the casting date located in the same area you found the 290 number but on passenger side, you also need the suffix code located on front pad where serial number locate ie: T1021CTA, this suffix will tell you what it is out of, steel

Also 1972 Camaro & Passenger cars.
I personally am interested in what the casting date & Deck pad say on this block.I have seen it scarcely used as a CE replacement block in 1970 cars years later.

The engine suffix code call out stamped on the alternator pad,was shared by all the cars they went into.
In this case, the engine suffix will not denote car model application.
Only the VIN# & plant would designate that.

see that learned somethin new, educate me please, how does the vin number and the plant designate the engine, I could see the plant through the build sheet but vin for the engine, i thought could only designate 6 or 8 cylinder, steel  graemlins/clonk.gif

I was saying the Vin# & plant will designate the car model, not the engine.
In this case if this engine block was installed in a 1972 Chevelle-Camaro-Passenger,the pad stamped suffix code is CLB for all 3 of them.
But the stampings after this will look like 12N123456 for a Camaro-12B123456 for a Chevelle-12C123456 for a Passenger.
(This is a small summary as I won't list all the plant letters each car could have, but you get the idea.)
Chevelles VIN# started with 500001-Camaros & pass with 100001.So that too would help designate the carline somewhat.

Nope not at all, just figured if you had a motor that was in a chevelle you'de be good to go. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Unless of course you're going for an all matching numbers car then you would need to supply the info Steel and MR70 are asking for.
Check my sig. no paperwork there!!! I drive it and enjoy it.
