I have a 396 that has a new solid lifter camshaft in it.I dont have any specs on the cam.
Can someone give me an idea of where to set the valve lash?

On both my Comp Cam solid cams the lash is set at .022 both intake and exhaust. This is the hot setting so if I am setting them cold I set them at .025

My UD 272/282 run at .020 on the intake, and .022 on the exhaust. Really though you see these vary from in the high teens range, to in the mid thirty thousandths range sometimes.

Without any specs on the cam it really is tough to say. Is the engine in the car already and assembled, no way you could pull the timing cover and look for numbers on the end or something?

Lash should be set TIGHTER if the engine is cold.

It depends on the materials
With iron block and iron heads, add .002" :hurray:
With iron block and aluminum heads, subtract .006".
With both aluminum block and heads, subtract .012".

It would be .024 cold for iron heads. This is for BBC.

i found my valve lash instructions, this is what it says, "after setting lash cold, start and bring to operating temp, due to thermal expansion the lash will now be looser than it was when engine was cold", wouldn't that support the theory of setting them tight vs loose when cold !!

I think if I didn't know what to set my valves to I would warm it up and check them all and find the valves that have the least clearance on the feeler gauges. Hopefully most are very close and you can figure out where you need to be. Its been a while since I had to run valves myself and was just recently thinking bout this.

How does it go again if you keep bumping it around? Intake open Intake close adjust exhaust. Exhaust closed adjust intake?

Is that correct? I forget
