: Decode VIN Number
VIN # 136379K479988
This is a 1969 Malibu but, is it a Super Sport?
According to your website I believe it is but, need to confirm the following:
Beginning in 1969 with the "SS" was lowered
to just an option, the series codes reflected differently. In 1969, for Chevelle to be an "SS" the series number would have to be "34" or
"36", followed by a "37"
Thanks, RL
Dean Feb 18th, 05, 4:25 PM No way to tell from those numbers.
In fact, in 1969 there is no way to tell an SS by any numbers anwhere on a USA assembled car (unless the original VIN is stamped on a 396 engine).

If the trim tag shows a paint code number for an SS exclusive color then it either IS an SS OR the tag has been changed.
DaleM Feb 19th, 05, 2:03 AM In addition to what Dean posted, 1969 was the ONLY year you could order the SS option on anything other than the Malibu or Custom El Camino, namely either the 300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan or hardtop.
In all (1969 only), the SS option could be on a Chevelle with a VIN of 13427 (300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan), 13437 (300 Deluxe 2-dr coupe), 13637 (Malibu 2-dr sport coupe), 13667 (Malibu 2-dr convertible), or 13680 (Custom El Camino).
elcamino Feb 19th, 05, 8:34 AM And this is what some fail to understand.
All 1969 V8 Chevelles would be 134xx or 136xx (136xx in 70-72) and this, in and off itself does not mean a car is a SS, just that would have to be to qualify for the SS396 option.
Dean Feb 20th, 05, 10:58 AM I tried to reply to your emails a couple of times Rick but they bounce back.
Your car could very well have been an SS with that color code.
The SS exclusive colors (Daytona Yellow, Monaca Orange) I was speaking of were ONLY used on SS cars BUT other clolors were used also.
You might possibly find a build sheet under/inside the seats, behind a door panel, under the dash, on top of the gas tank, stuck to the inside of a front fender, above the head liner or just about any place an assembly line worker might have stuck one.
DLH Jan 20th, 06, 12:34 AM How do you determine if the car is a SS car. I have a 1969 Chevelle 396 VIN 136379K29289. I would really appreciate the help. Thanks Dave..
Wheelhop Jan 20th, 06, 10:05 AM The numbers after the K on your vin should have six digits, not five. might be a typo?
DLH Jan 20th, 06, 12:35 PM It was a typo on my part it is 136379K429289. Thanks for noticing, but I still need help.
Wheelhop Jan 20th, 06, 11:57 PM You can't tell from the vin. Only way to tell for sure is a build sheet or original documentation. read some of the comments from the guys above.
good luck
oldtimebaseballfan Jan 21st, 06, 11:13 AM Did you find a Protect-O-Plate with the car? That will also have the info you need.
