: Good 2004R casting number??

I just got a 2004R from a buddy of mine. It's out of a 84 Monte SS. Is 423 a good casting number on the bellhousing to have?

Second question is can I use my Turbo 350 dipstick tube. He couldn't find the stock one. I haven't had a chance to visually compare the locations.

Thanks!

Don't worry about the tail housing casting number ,get the 3 digit/letter code.
The transmission application tag is located on the passenger side rear of the transmission on the case just above & forward of the trans mount.
Should be 4CQ if it's '84 MC SS.

The tag says "CQ" and then under it is the serial number. Is the Monte SS trans a good one to start with? And once again, can I use my Turbo 350 dipstick tube?

That "423" is just the mold that the housing was cast in. The dipstick tube from the THM350 won't work in a 2004R. And yes the Monte Carlo SS transmission would be as good as any to work with.

Anyone know the best place to get a dipstick/tube and a TV cable with bracket for a Holley carb?

by start with, what are you after? IIRC all 2004R's are the same EXCEPT the Buick ones from the GN and maybe Turbo cars. The valve body is better and internals are stronger I believe. They just had an article in a mag a few months ago about them, can't remember the guys name though I should.

I have the same article somewhere and was under the impression the Monte SS trans had the better GN parts as well. I'll have to go find that issue!

I'm not sure of that since it was only behind 305's in the MCSS, it definitely won't have the sought after VB, but the other stuff I'm not sure. Let me know what you find.

Internally there aren't any significant differences between the GN and other units.

The Monte SS CZ and CQ valve bodies are actually better than the GN units. They have better detent scheduling than the VB's designed for the turbo cars. They work better behind a V8 in a conversion and they are equally desirable for modded GN's as well.

GN's had a BQ and BR code valve body, 694 servo for 86-86 models, and a lightweight governor with 11 tooth speedo drive gear.

MCSS had CZ and CQ codes, 10 tooth driven gear lightweight governor, and the 692 (smaller) servo.

Install a GN code servo in a Monte SS trans and you actually have a better unit.

Most builders use a billet servo which is better on a 450+ HP piece.

You can use a stock GM dipstick and tube, but they keep getting discontinued so you have to come up with an application.
