I have to change the QTR panel on the right side and I am not sure how to install the panel on or over or welded to the rocker panel and the same with the door jam. Is there a reference book or web site that may help me. After seeing the difference with a butt weld and flanging, I am opting to go with the butt weld procedure so there is less of an noticeable seem in the trunk. Thanks for any help.

It all depends on your qtr panel. Is it a full qtr with the door jambs or is it a patch panel?
On a full qtr panel you drill some holes in the flange that lays on the rocker and weld it on from the inside. You may have to pull the window and mechanisum to get access to you weld area. Butt welding is the preferred method but you have to be real good to get that butt weld seam just right. I've had to over lap most of my weld repair and I've been messing with this stuff since 1974.

Judging by his question, I think what he is using is an 80% quarter. On those the stamping includes the rocker portion right behind the door infront of the wheel well. I think what he is asking is how to attach that part of the quarter, maybe?

That is right I have a 80% panel that over laps the rocker and the door jam,I was thinking of leaving 2 inches above the rocker from the existing Qtr and butt welding it and as far as the door jam, grinding it down enough to over lap the jam with the new Qtr and plug welding and finishing out with filler. The gotcha's I have read are,car weight on wheels/door perfectly aligned with existing panel/block out or support the sail from the inside of the trunk so you dont get a flat spot when installing the new Qtr. If I have missed anything please feel free to give advice. I am a novice with auto sheetmetal my experience is from aircrft sheetmetal. Thanks for you guys help,Neal

Glad I was able to clarify your question....unfortunately that's about all the help I can be. I am actually in the same predicament as you, except I only have the rocker to work with, no old quarter to graft on to (at least not at the rocker)

Thanks for helping me clarify my question, bet that I presented some gotcha's that you are shaking your head over, since your quarter is already missing. I wish you the best ,maybe we can get some answers.

Cut the new 1/4 to just above the rocker seam, same with the door jamb. Leave all the original attachment points and butt weld the entire center part. Dont over lap in the door jamb, it will close the door gap too much.

Clear as mud?

We dont get much snow here so there is very little salt used on the roads, but the cars do rust some, I had to replace both 1/4s on my 70 and it was in this area its whole life.
