Hi everyone, I plan on getting an AGR 492117 box soon and am wondering if I should replace the p/s pump as well. Right now there are times when I may be parking or driving at a real slow speed and there is a chirping sound when turning the wheel. Is this a normal occurrence from lack of pressure or a way to tell if the pump is going bad? I don't think the stock box is bad, I'm just looking to upgrade for more feel. I would rather not run the risk of getting a junk yard box so the GC swap is sort of out of the question. Any help is appreciated.

Whether or not you go with the AGR box, IF you can survive with the car "down" for a while, maybe send the pump to Tom Lee...
Tom quoted me around $85 to rebuild my pump. Not sure if thats the going rate (I was also discussing having my streering box rebuilt by him at the time)... I forget, but I think the AGR pump might be quite a bit more expensive...
Of course, If you can't have the car apart for several weeks, then this might not work...
Not really sure on the noice you are hearing...

I put the agr 292117 in mine. also put one of the AGR high performance pumps in at the same time. be aware there are 2 styles if you go this route. one has a press on pulley, and the other is bolt on. as long as it matches the type of pulley you have, you should be good to go.
are you sure your belt is tight right now? sometimes if the belt slips a little, you will get that kinda chirping sound and you can usually feel it in the wheel too. kinda jerky feeling for lack of better description. assuming your fluid is not low, it is usually just a belt adjustment or replacement that is needed.
btw on the AGR box and pump... best upgrade I did to this car yet (and i have upgraded about everything mechanical in the car at this point). road feel is fantastic. the effort to turn the wheel is very near what a manual box car feels like, not quit as heavy, but close. feels like a newer sports car steering. can't recommend this upgrade to people strongly enough... best part is the stock hoses (replaced with new ones for cleanliness and leak free operation) and the stock pitman arm and rag joint all bolt right up.

A new AGR box does not require a new PS pump. Replace it only if you really want to.
I second the suggestion to check your belt tension for the squeak. Much more likely cause and does not really hurt anything. Mine does that occaisionally.

Thats exactly what happens. For example when I'm backing out of a parking space, the wheel will at times get a little harder to turn, like it catches or something, accompanied by the chirp or squeak. I'll check my fluid level during the day tomorrow, isn't there 2 lines one for cold and one for hot? If so, then if I don't start the car go by the cold? And about the belt being loose, I've always thought the pulleys looked to move a lot, but anytime its been looked at they've said its fine. I'll have to ask again..

check your fluid with the car running. WATCH THE FAN! you don't wanna put your hand in it... believe me on that!
more than likely from what you just described, either your belt is loose or it is loose and needs to be replaced. so tighten it up and see if that helps. if it still squeals/chirps, change the belt then tighten it.
