Trying to verify all the components should be painted Chevy orange on a 1970 396/350HP:
Block and heads
Cast Iron Intake
Water Neck
Engine Lift Hook
Water Pump
Timing Cover
Balancer -- ??
Am I missing anything?

Engine Lift Hook--YES, both of them
Water Pump------YES
Timing Cover-----YES
Balancer -- ??----Yes, but not lower pulley
Am I missing anything?

Add to that list, the base of the distributor, oil pan, overspray on exhaust manifolds (if you're going THAT correct... :D) overspray on edge of bellhousing if a 4 speed, overspray on bypass hose from intake to water pump.

I forgot to ask. Are the following painted orange as well on the '70 396/350 HP motor?:
Intake Bolts
Water Pump Bolts
Thermostat Housing Bolts
I would assume so but I see folks with some painted and some not.

Are the two water pump fitting painted orange also the vacuum line clip.

Yes, these would be painted on a cast iron intake engine.

That is a good question. I believe the fittings would be painted, and I am not sure about the clip. I'm thinking it was on the engine when painted, so on a cast iron intake car, probably yes, and on an aluminum intake car, no.
