Just found my build sheet for my 70 Chevelle ... it is torn up pretty good (pic on my website == look under pics). The VIN matches my car .. the only options that are visible is *U27 Glove Box Lp; U63 AM P/B Radio; U76 W/S Antenna; and hopefully most important #ZL3 SS396 CONVERS. Also under Air Cleaner it says SS and Whl Cvrs it has 770 FJ
3 questions
1) I assume this verifies it is a true SS -- does the #ZL3 tell me about motor?
2) For Air Cleaner (SS) -- Does this mean it came with the functioning Cowl Induction Hood or just mean it had the SS Cleaner?
3) Does anyone know what the 770 FJ mean for the wheels -- is that the SS wheels?
Thanks All!
Dave

ZL3 SS 396 CONV only tells the body and trim shops to include SS trim and exterior details The engine option (350np or 375hp) would be listed separately as L34 or L78/L89.
SS is a stocking code for the air cleaner so workers know which to pull without resorting to part numbers. SS is for a non cowl-induction hood (ZL2), those had DG coded in block 55 regardless of engine.
Sheets I have show either 323FJ, --FJ, **775 or in block 91 (WHL CVRS) except for one Baltimore 396 with the 770FJ code. The only big difference between it and another Balt car with 323FJ is the latter is a LS5 car but both are sport coupes and even have the same tires optioned. Check out some of the sheets here (http://www.chevellestuff.com/70stuff/70velle/70_build.htm) and a readable synopsis here (http://www.chevellestuff.com/70stuff/70velle/tech/70_build_sheet_decoding.htm). If you can spot the reasoning for the one 770FJ coded car, clue me in. :D

yes, you have a SS396 car. Do you have the upper left half of the sheet? The engine code is over there. SS is for the open element air cleaner used on the SS cars.

There was a gradual change over from YA to AO wheels in '70, so people claim. This will show on an SS build sheet.

Thanks guys .. unfortunately the left portion of the build sheet didn't make it .. only found the right side. Atleast the VIN was still intact and the SS option.
I'm hoping to find another copy over the Gas Tank -- maybe I'll get luck.
Thanks,
Dave

Box 91 shows the SS wheel center cap.
For Baltimore Plant,770 FJ is coding for the two piece bolt on SS center cap used on the included RPO N66 wheels.
The center caps complete Part# is #3956770.This was used on the 1969 SS rims & early 1970 SS cars.Just like the YA & AO coded SS rims.
Later on in the 1970 model year, there was a switch to a one piece Spring retaining clip SS center cap.
It was part#3983323 & would show 323 FJ in box 91.
