Using the vin # or cowl tag, is it possible to identify a 1967 Malibu from a Chevelle? Is there any other way?
Thanks, Mike

Well,

A Malibu IS a Chevelle...

There were several "levels" in the Chevelle line, including 300, 300 Deluxe, Malibu, El Camino, El Camino Custom, Concours, Supersport...

But they were ALL Chevelles...

The VIN numbers were different...

For example, Malibu VIN # would start with 135 (for 6-cylinder cars) and 136 (for V-8s)

The fancier El Camino Customs also started with 135 and 136...

Supersports started with 138...

The more basic Chevelles started with 131, 132, 133 and 134. The "odd" third digit is for 6-cylinders and the "even" third digit is for V8 cars...

Here's a great page:
http://www.chevellestuff.com/67stuff/index.htm

That site has some great info...

Also another thing is if the car is a 2-door (non-convertible). Malibu and SuperSport were ONLY available in a 2-door hardtop (no post) Sport Coupe (recessed back window too)... The 300 and 300 Deluxe versions were ONLY avaialbe in a 2-door sedan (Post) style (flush back window).

Chevelle is the entire 13000 series, Malibus are models 135xx and 136xx within the Chevelle lineup. See http://www.chevellestuff.com/67stuff/67velle/trim_tag_decoding.htm for the model breakdown of all in the Chevelle 13000 series.
