: 69 smog pump on original car?

This crossed my mind, so I thought I would ask. I believe I have seen 69 SS396's on here with smog pumps. If so, I was wondering if mine would have had one on it origanally. I have a 69 SS that I am restoring that was built at Fremont plant and sold in CA. Would that tell me anything? Did certain states require smog pumps in 69? I do not have build sheet. Thanks.

The L72 and L78 cars had them for sure.

What HP is your car and transmission and is it a AC car? More info is needed to fill out the blanks:yes:

It is a SS396/325/TH400 (L35) with factory air

More than likley I would say it did, just because it was sold new in CA.

My guess is that it didn't.
I know that emission regulations were the same throughout the US in 1968, and I'm 99.44% sure that was true in 1969, i.e. they weren't different in CA as they had been in '66 and '67, and were again in '70 and later.
The '68 big block cars with automatic transmissions and closed-style air cleaners weren't required to have an AIR (smog) pump. They had different carburetor and distributor calibrations, and the TCAC (thermostatically controlled air cleaner) with the heat stove and pipe to supply heated air to the carb. All manual transmission cars and all cars with open-element air cleaners (L-34,L-78) had the AIR pumps. I'm pretty sure this also applied to the '69 models.
A/C didn't matter for emission purposes.
There are people who will contest these points, but they're wrong. :boxing:

From what I have been able to gather over the years. For 69, the only big block Chevelles that didn't have smog were the 325hp/automatic cars. All manual shift cars had smog, 350hp and 375hp cars all had smog regardless of the transmission type.

I just recently looked at a 69 BB 325hp automatic/air car built in California, and sold there. It did not have smog.

Hope this helps.

Woj.

Bill, not to start an argument, but there are two words not to be used in the old car hobby...... Always, and Never. We did not work at every plant, and process every order, therefore we don't know exactly how every car was built. His car could be an anomoly, and have a smog pump...

Just food for thought...:beers:

That's OK, Brad. I'll be there too, with steel-toed boots, my TFH, and a flame suit. :p

Lets put it this way, then-IF the car was built with an AIR pump, then
1. The water pump pulley would have been different.
2. The exhaust manifolds would have been different.
3. As stated before, the carb and distributor would have
been different.
4. The air cleaner would have been different, and if the correct, closed air filter was used, wouldn't there be interference between the heat stove pipe and the smog pipes??
5. The tune up sticker would have been different.
6. If the car has A/C, the bracketry would have been different.
7. The belts would be different.
8. I would think that the workers in the engine assembly area would be really confused with all of these different parts, and I would expect the QC guys would pick up on it pretty quickly.

JMHO, but I can't see something like this getting out of the factory...but I could be wrong. But I doubt it.:D

Link to my 69 L34 with A/C smog equipment. Just in case it helps someone out.

These two points would apply to a '68, not a '69, sorry.

More fuel for the flame. the GM Restoration kit for 1969 El Caminos has a section on "Engine Features" that coupe/convertible/sedan kit doesn't have. The El Camino kit says, "A.I.R. is used with the the 396 V8 on all El Caminos with both manual & automatic transmissions." Wonder why that would be?
