Hey guys,

Quick question maybe you can help me out. A while ago I posted my POP plate Vin info on the site - verified it through GM vintage services as an L78 1968 Baltimore car.

Question goes like this, here is my cars info for your reference:

Here is the POP plate:

Now you decoding guys will notice right away that the Carb code shows a "B" rather than an "H". I was under the impression that all 375HP cars came with Holleys not Bay City Rochesters.

I contacted your sister site a while ago asking if this ever came up with L78 Camaros, and it seems that a few L78 Camaros had the same issue with their POP as well, but again I have seen no real hard proof of this. Does anyone have any answers to this?

Now I know that the 1968 L78 Chevelle came with Carb 3923289 0-4053 which Holley is producing as the factory replacement under the O.E. Musclecar series

However! On this site here:
http://www.holisticpage.com/camaro/parts/carb.htm
There is a listing for a Rochester Q-Jet 375 1968 Carb. The info for this is:
7028211 4MV 1968 396 375 ST
Seems to fit the description almost perfectly, even made for a 375hp AND for a Standard.

However I see problems mounting this carb to the 3933164 intake because the bolt patters are different.

I am totally confused now. For argument sake, is it plosable the car came with a Rochester or more likely a Holley?

I appriciate your thoughts and comments, maybe im over looking something or I am miss-informed. If someone can steer me into the right direction that would be appriciated.

Thanks

Eric

Numbers are always changing. I have a GM Parts & Accessory Catalog, circa 1971 showing only one carburetor for a 1968 Chevelle 396 w/Sp. H/Per. (375hp) and that being the Holley 3923289. Since I've never seen an explanation of what a 'Bay City' carburetor is (not Holley, not Carter, and not Rochester as such), and Bay City being in Michigan, I'd guess that maybe Holley (and/or others) outsourced all or part of the manufacturing of "Holley" carburetors for OEM use. That would explain the "B" on the POP and not "H". Are you sure Bay City only produced Rochester carburetors? I don't know, just asking.

As far as the Camaro site reference, again referencing my GM parts book, it doesn't show a Rochester for the Camaro either but rather the same Holley. I think the Camaro reference page is for carburetor ID numbers (much like engine ID stamped numbers) and not GM part numbers on Rochesters. Those stamped numbers were used to ID repair parts and kits as well. I don't find any GM part numbers like shown on that page much less for a 375hp Camaro. The majority of Rochester 4-bbl carbs had part numbers beginning with 701xxxx.

BTW, any chance of you allowing me to use your POP and GM of Canada documentation on my Chevellestuff.com site for refencing?
