: Chevelle leaving..What to do with motor??
cessnarob May 7th, 09, 9:58 AM I traded the body of my 72 for a complete master bath remodel..The gentlemen that is doing this wasn't able to come up with enough cash to do an equal amount for whole car and parts, so I separated everything..
Now for the question..my 396 has everything NEW..but had to many problems with the block?? Do I get another 396 block, bore .060 and put all my parts in and on it, or do I get a 454 block, buy new pistons and reuse all my goodies and build a home made 427??. 396 blocks seem to be a bit costly these days, I'm thinking I could probably save a few bucks by doing a 427 since 454's are a dime a dozen around here..I might even have a set of 427 pistons on the shelf at my dads that I might be able to use if he isn't..
It is my intentions to buy another Chevelle (69 model) as soon I find employment and sell this house..That is why I needed some upgrades done and this was the easiest way to do this..What ya'll think 396 or 427..I'd do a poll but never figured out how to do it...Rob
Scotch May 7th, 09, 12:56 PM Always get as many cubes as you can afford.
Sell off what you don't need. Otherwise it takes up space and usually gets damaged or corroded (at least in my garage LOL).
I'd save up for a stroker if I were you, but that's just me.
If the block is older vintage, maybe you could find someone who needs it based on the date codes or something.
It all depends what you're after, of course. If you're planning to build another Chevelle, torque is the goal to get the heavy car moving (versus a Vega or a rail or a '30s-era rod). More cubes, more stroke, more torque. Plan your next engine build with this in mind, take your time with it, design it carefully, make it super efficient, and you'll be happiest.
grandsport May 7th, 09, 1:31 PM Rob,I'd go with a 307. Better fuel economy and Obama friendlier.:D

OH YEAH..I'll go in another Chevelle..I have time on my side right now..My whole engine is new, just keeps running hot and stripping head bolts..So I was looking at doing a new block and just swapping all my stuff to it basically..

Everything in and on this 396 is Brand new..I don't mind buying new pistons to make a 427..I can get a 454 block for around $250-$350..Most 396 blocks I come across are $1500+ And I need to find a 396 that is ready for a .060 bore..I would not take a standard bore block and run it out to .060.
I guess the ultimate question is since the only difference is bore size between a 396 and 427..what could be my potential HP gain??
