I have a 66 SS Chevelle the VIN# is 138676K173823 my question is about the last six digits I know the production sequence starts at 100001 my car was made in March how could it have such a high number, did they start at 100001 and go up in order? They only made 72,272 Chevelle's. The vin on the block matches, should I be worried, or is this the way they did it? Thanks in advance for your help. Brian

Correct...each plant started Chevelle serial numbers at 100001 in 1966 and yours is the 73, 823rd from KC. Kansas City assembled an approximate total of 118,051 Chevelles in 1966.

The 72,272 number is just the number of Super Sports that were built in 1966. All Chevelles, including Super Sports, are numbered sequentially starting at 100001 at each plant.
