I am looking at another 1970 Chevelle SS 454 car. The car is a "L" Los Angeles car built in February 1970.
Were engine VIN stamps on the pad or by the oil filter on 454 SS cars made in Los Angeles in the time frame outlined above?

I have a Van Nuys ("L") built 71 SS454 that was built the second week in September 1970. It has the original engine, the vin derivative is stamped vertically in the rough casting by the oil filter. The engine pad has the assembly date and suffix code, but no vin#.

Both of my 1970 cars were built in Los Angeles (Van Nuys) and both have the VIN derivative stamped on the block down by the oil filter.
FYI, both had build sheets on top of the gas tank also.

Thanks for the information. I looked at the car in question this weekend and the VIN derivitve stamp "is" by the oil filter.
