it is hard to tell a real one in 69 since it is just an option and not a model anymore after 68
but there are things to look for that only ss cars have
side molding shold not be on car (some have been seen with it though)
engine serial is a sure bet if it still has its original 396
two lines for the gas (one of them is a return line and I think the 375 horse only has one gas line but it is very big)
no holes where malibu could have gone on the rear quarters
no engine size on front side marker lights (no holes either)
there are some of the things you can look for
I'm sure that other people will have other details for you too

Check the rear tail panel for the molding holes,, if they are round,, its probly a clone,, the original tail panels had oval type stamped holes for the 2 SS moldings,, 12 bolt rear end,, big sway bar on the front,, disc brakes,,

Wouldn't mind seeing the pictures but heck nobody can even tell a good clone job from a factory SS in real life so there would probably be no way to tell in pictures unless maybe it's a very poor clone job.

About all the VIN decodes to is year and body style.
Since there is no difference in thr VIN between a plain Malibu or a Malibu SS it won't tell If it is an SS or not.

heres the deal went down to check it and as far as i can tell its a real SS has disc brakes 12 bolt and none of the usual places where you would find malibu emblems have been filled infact i believe the car is still in the original color the bad thing which aint that bad is the passenger floor pan is rusted through the passenger rocker is risted the fender is rusted also but as far as i cant Tell its real The Engine is however long gone now its a 350

Sounds like it may have been an SS.
I think it probably wouldn't really matter all that much to most people.
Without proof or the original engine it's no different than a clone really.
